Sermon 07/06/26 by Pastor Sunil Luximon- WHO IS YOUR DEFENDER?

Jesus is our defender. 1 JOHN 2:2
We all face opposition in life, whether it’s spiritual, physical or emotional. Jesus will never forsake us or abandon us. He will be by our side. He is our defender.
In Hebrew, a defender is a Goel.
Goel means redeemer. A redeemer is someone who purchases us back.
Jesus is our kinsman’s redeemer.
A kinsman’s redeemer is someone who has the responsibility to act on our behalf. It also has some conditions that come with the responsibility:
1st condition- of a relative who is in trouble, danger or need.
Someone who stands in on our behalf if we are in trouble, danger or need. Jesus is our Goel- our defender- our kinsman’s redeemer
A redeemer is a rescuer, a preserver, a defender, a deliverer, liberator, a champion. A kinsman’s redeemer is a guardian an avenger, a superhero, a fighter, a saviour, role model, messiah and a Good Samaritan. That’s who our Jesus is. Jesus is alive and he has not changed. He is ready to intervene and fight for us.
In the book of Ruth- we see Boaz as the kinsman’s redeemer. He was a distant relative to Naomi. He saw Ruth working in the field and he stepped in her situation and rescued lher.
In the Old Testament a defender is Goel and in the New Testament the defender is Parakletost (Greek).
Parakletos is our comforter, our intercessor, our helper and our advocate, our barrister who can stand for us.
Jesus is our parakletos. Parakletos comes and stands by our side. As the lawyer/ barrister who stands by us in defends us in a court, Jesus also stands by our side and defends us.
He does not only defend in the court but also against all accusations REVELATIONS 12:10
Some of the names we use for our God, our defender:
1-Jehovah Nissi- the Lord is my banner : Exodus 17:15
2- Jehovah Sabaoth- the Lord of Host.
3- El-Gibbor- the mighty God, the hero, the mighty warrior.
4-El- Roi - the God who sees us
5- Yaweh Shaphat- the Lord our judge.
6- El-Elyon- the God most high. The highest and the supreme authority.
When we pray, remember God and call him by these names. Say you are Jehovah Nissi, my banner, you are the Lord of Host and the mighty warrior.
Pastor Sunil encourages us to remember that whatever battle we may be facing, we have a true defender, a lawyer, a senior counsellor who is ready to step in and stand by our side and to speak on our behalf. When we do not know what to do, turn to our Goel, to our Parakletos and let him defend us.
We have an accuser - kategoros (Greek) who accuses us day and night: REVELATION 12. But we have our advocate, our lawyer, our Goel who argues our case on a spiritual and legal ground. He argues our cases on spiritual laws (bible) which is an unchallenged evidence. Meditate on God’s word day and night . We have a verdict which means that we have been made the righteousness of God through the blood of Jesus.
Pastor Sunil encourages to meditate on the word of God and to use the names of God when we pray. God will surely step in our situation, defend us and give us victory.
