Applied Arabic: Understand What You Recite Course | Week 1: Surah Al- Fatihah

๐Ÿ“– What did we learn in Week 1?

We began our Arabic course by exploring Surah Al-Fatihah, the opening chapter of the Quran and an essential part of every rakaat of our daily Salah.

The session went beyond translation. Students were introduced to the basics of Sarf (morphology) and Nahw (syntax), as well as variations in Quranic Qiraโ€™at, such as โ€œMaalikiโ€ and โ€œMalikiโ€, to see how Arabic language and structure can deepen our understanding of the verses.

Through a word-by-word analysis, we explored the deeper meanings behind al-Fatihah โ€” from recognising Allah as our Lord, Master and Owner of the Day of Judgement, to understanding the concepts of โ€˜Ibฤdah (worship) and Istiโ€˜ฤnah (seeking help), and our continuous duโ€˜a for guidance upon the Sirฤt al-Mustaqฤซm.

Ultimately, the aim is simple: to connect the Arabic we learn with the words we recite every day, so that our Salah can be filled with greater understanding, appreciation and khushuโ€™. ๐Ÿค

โณ There are still 2 weeks left of the course, and itโ€™s not too late to join!

Missed the first two sessions? Donโ€™t worry. Recordings will be provided, so you can catch up and follow along.

Meet Puan Haslina, Naqi and Saif from Austria ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡น, who have been part of KAFA since 2022.

Their journey with us is a reminder that distance should never be a barrier to giving our children a strong foundation in their deen. Through KAFA, families from different parts of the world can learn, grow and stay connected to Islamic education from the comfort of their homes. ๐Ÿ“–๐ŸŒ

Weโ€™re grateful for the trust that families like theirs have placed in us over the years, and for the opportunity to play a small part in nurturing the next generation of Muslims in the diaspora.

May Allah bless Puan Haslina, Naqi, Saif and family, and make their learning a source of guidance, benefit and barakah throughout their lives.

Thereโ€™s something special about seeing a family learn the Quran and their deen together, even from thousands of miles away. ๐Ÿค

Qaira joined KAFA in 2023, followed by her younger sister Ullya in 2024. Today, their family joins us all the way from Sweden. ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช

Listening to their feedback reminded us of something important: parents are looking for more than just a class for their children. They want a strong foundation in Islamic knowledge โ€” something that can nurture and guide their children as they grow into their teenage years and beyond.

But for children, itโ€™s often the little things they remember most. The laughter, activities, stories, games and moments of joy that make learning their deen something they look forward to. ๐Ÿ’›

And perhaps this is what we strive to create at KAFA: a place where children can build a strong foundation in their deen, while also creating positive memories along the way.

Since 2020, KAFA has been fully online, evolving from our physical madrasah at Sofa Mosque London into an online learning environment connecting students across the globe. ๐ŸŒ Weโ€™ve continued adapting our teaching methods, training our teachers and making use of interactive tools to ensure that learning online remains engaging, meaningful and effective.

Today, families join us not only from the UK, but from Sweden, Austria, the Netherlands, Ireland and many other parts of the world.

Weโ€™re truly grateful to families like Qaira and Ullyaโ€™s for trusting us with their childrenโ€™s Islamic education. May Allah make their learning a source of guidance, benefit and barakah throughout their lives.๐Ÿคฒ๐Ÿผ

If youโ€™d like your family to experience the same journey as Izzuan, Norbaiti, Qaira and Ullya, we would love to welcome you to the KAFA UK family. ๐Ÿค

Alhamdulillah, we were honoured to welcome Tuan Haji Shariff and his mother, together with Datin Isma and her family, to the SEAIC UK Office.

Datin Isma is a Malaysian influencer known for her travel and cooking content. During her visit, she took the opportunity to learn more about SEAIC UKโ€™s work on the ground, while also helping to promote Tuan Haji Shariffโ€™s properties in the UK through her social media platforms.

We shared how SEAIC UK serves the South East Asian Muslim community and the wider community through essential Islamic services, including Nikah services, Shahadah, convert care, Fardhu โ€˜Ain classes, Zakat collection and distribution, Islamic education for children, community programmes and more.

Beyond these services, SEAIC UK seeks to safeguard the faith and religious practice of South East Asian Muslims living in the UK. Living here brings many opportunities, but also exposes our community to different cultures, ideologies and interpretations of Islam. We therefore aim to provide contextual Islamic guidance rooted in the tradition of our community.

Every day, we receive enquiries on practical Fiqh matters specific to living in the UK โ€” from prayer times and Islamic calendars, to finding suitable mosques, Zakat, Taharah and many other questions that may differ from the context of the Nusantara.

Tuan Haji Shariff, one of SEAIC UKโ€™s longest-standing and biggest supporters, shared with Datin Isma and her family that he sees SEAIC UKโ€™s work as a noble responsibility and a Fardhu Kifayah โ€” safeguarding the religion of Muslims here and providing essential services for the community, from cradle to grave.

We are deeply grateful to Tuan Haji Shariff for his continued generosity and support towards SEAIC UK. May Allah bless him and his mother with good health, a long and blessed life, and abundant rizq.

Our sincere thanks also to Datin Isma and her family for taking the time to visit us, learn about our work and support our efforts. May Allah bless her and her family with barakah, health and continued success. Ameen.

If you know of any serious buyers who may be interested, please help us share the news of Tuan Haji Shariffโ€™s property sale with them. (You may refer to our post dated 15 July for more details of the property.) If you are interested, please DM us for the contact details โ€” serious enquiries only.

And if you would like to support the work of SEAIC UK, we invite you to get involved and contribute towards sustaining these essential services for our community. May we all follow the beautiful example of generous supporters like Tuan Haji Shariff. ๐Ÿคฒ๐Ÿผ

Friday Majlis: Remembering the Beloved (SAW) | 21 August 2026
๐Ÿ“ SEAIC UK Office, London

Alhamdulillah, our Friday Majlis continued in the blessed month of Rabiโ€˜ al-Awwal, with a special focus on remembering and learning about our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

The Majlis began with our usual recitation of two qasaid: Allahu Jallallahu Jallallahu and Qasidah Ash-Shakiyyah, followed by Salawat Nurul Anwar. We then performed Maghrib prayer in congregation, followed by a beautiful Qurโ€™an recitation by one of our young community members, Yahya.

The evening continued with a special sharing by Muhammad Zaimul Aqwa bin Mohd Zaโ€™im, an undergraduate student at Al-Azhar University, Egypt, on โ€œKnowing Rasulullah (SAW) Through His Blessed Shamaโ€™il.โ€

He began by reflecting on the words of Allah SWT in Surah al-Ahzab (33:21):

โ€œIndeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah often.โ€

He reminded us of the special status of salawat, being an act of worship that Allah SWT Himself performs, showing us the immense honour of our beloved Prophet (SAW) and his special place in the sight of Allah SWT.

Zaim also shared his personal experience of coming to the UK from Egypt and the challenges of living as a Muslim in a non-Muslim country. He reflected on how differences in clothing, culture and language can sometimes make practising Islam more challenging. Yet, he reminded us that being present in a Majlis of knowledge and dhikr is a great blessing โ€” one of the gardens of Jannah, where the angels surround and pray for those who gather.

The session also explored the importance of learning the Shamaโ€™il of the Prophet (SAW). This is not merely about learning his physical characteristics, favourite foods or colours, but about understanding and embodying his beautiful akhlak โ€” how he treated the elderly, interacted with non-Muslims, carried out daโ€˜wah, cared for his family and companions, and demonstrated selflessness throughout his life.

The Majlis concluded with Ishaโ€™ prayer and a simple meal shared together as a community. It was a peaceful and meaningful evening in the blessed month of Rabiโ€˜ al-Awwal, the month in which our beloved Prophet (SAW) was born.

We are grateful to everyone who attended and made this Majlis a gathering of remembrance, knowledge and love for the Messenger of Allah (SAW). May Allah increase our love for him, help us follow his Sunnah inwardly and outwardly, and gather us with him in the Hereafter. Ameen. โค๏ธ

Our sincere thanks to our guest speaker, Muhammad Zaimul Aqwa, for sharing his knowledge and reflections with us. May Allah bless him in his studies at Al-Azhar and grant him continued success in serving the Ummah.
