Today we celebrate the Feast of All Saints.

This feast is not simply a commemoration of holy men and women from the past. It is a celebration of what humanity can become through the grace of God.

The saints came from every age, nation and walk of life. Some were bishops and monks, others were mothers and fathers, workers and labourers. They knew the same struggles, disappointments and weaknesses that we know. What united them was not perfection, but their willingness to open their hearts to Christ and allow His life to shine through them.

In the saints, we see humanity as God intended it to be. As St Irenaeus teaches, "The glory of God is a living human being, and the life of the human being is the vision of God." The saints reveal what this means. They are truly alive because their lives have become rooted in the life of God and transformed by His grace.

The same Holy Spirit who sanctified the saints continues to work within the Church today, calling each of us to become more fully the person God created us to be. The Feast of All Saints reminds us that the Kingdom of God is not merely a future hope. It is already present among us. In the lives of the saints we glimpse that Kingdom, and we are encouraged to continue our own journey towards it.

As we honour all the saints today, let us set aside a few moments to place ourselves before the Lord in prayer. Let us thank Him for His gifts, ask forgiveness for our failings, and entrust to Him the people and concerns we carry in our hearts. Perhaps we might also choose a saint whose life inspires us, read a little about them, ask for their prayers, and seek to imitate one small aspect of their faithfulness.

The saints are not distant figures from a forgotten past, but our brothers and sisters in Christ. We can bind ourselves to them through prayer, seek their intercessions, and learn from their example. The path to holiness begins not in extraordinary achievements, but in these small acts of faithfulness, offered day by day to God.

Through the prayers of all the saints, may Christ our God grant us wisdom, courage and peace as we seek to follow Him.

Our church garden isn't just enjoyed by people!
These are just some of the birds regularly spotted in the garden: blackbirds, robins and wrens.

(We used the Merlin birdsong app to recognise them)

Thanks to the hard work of our volunteers, the garden continues to flourish as a peaceful green space for the parish and a haven for local wildlife.

St. Porphyrios, hearing a nightingale in the stillness of the forest, said that its song taught him ‘how to praise God’ and that its purpose was ‘to sing to their Creator, to worship God’. May our garden continue to be a place where creation quietly praises the Lord.

We're hoping to add raised beds in the future and continue improving the space for everyone to enjoy.

If you'd like to lend a hand with the garden, we'd love to welcome more volunteers. 🌿🐦

Today we remember St Hilarion the New, a monk, abbot and confessor who lived during one of the most turbulent periods in the history of the Church.

St Hilarion did not seek prominence. He sought prayer, repentance and the quiet life of a monk. Yet when the veneration of the holy icons came under attack, he found himself called to bear witness. He spoke the truth to emperors, endured imprisonment, exile and torture, and remained faithful throughout long years of suffering.

What is striking is that St Hilarion's greatness lay not in dramatic miracles or worldly achievements, but in steadfastness. He simply refused to abandon Christ and the faith he had received. When power demanded compromise, he remained faithful. When persecution came, he endured. When freedom was restored, he returned quietly to his monastery and continued his life of prayer.

In every generation Christians face pressures to conform, to remain silent, or to reshape the faith according to the spirit of the age. The witness of St Hilarion reminds us that the Christian life is not about winning arguments or gaining influence. It is about remaining faithful, whatever the cost.

The restoration of the holy icons was not merely a victory for religious art. It was a proclamation that God truly became man, that matter can be sanctified, and that Christ can be depicted because He truly entered our human history.

May the prayers of St Hilarion strengthen us to remain faithful in the ordinary struggles of daily life, to hold fast to Christ with humility, courage and love, and to see His image in every person we meet.

Holy Father Hilarion, pray to God for us.🕯️ "Having cultivated the grace of the Lord's words, you flourished like an olive tree, rich in divine virtues and in your confession of the faith." (Apolytikion of St Hilarion the New)
