Koinonia

We are an ecumenical community of students following Jesus in London! Some 400,000 students study in London, many from overseas.

Koinonia is a Christian student ministry and registered charity based at the University of London, Koinonia attracts members from many of the different colleges that make up the University. The result is an extremely diverse community of disciples from many different backgrounds, races and traditions.

Grab a cup of coffee, this one runs a bit longer, but it's worth the sit-down.

Two years ago, Rock came from the Philippines to spend a Mission Year with Koinonia, sharing the gospel with students in London.

In this conversation, Selene sits down with Rock to talk about what that year actually looked like: the beauty of stepping into a community full of diversity, the challenge and the gift of being part of something genuinely ecumenical, and what it means to carry the gospel across different cultures .

Mission was never meant to be for just some people, or for one set-apart year. It's meant for a whole life.

Discipleship rarely happens on its own. For a lot of our students, it happens in a small group, same faces, same room, week after week, learning to follow Jesus together.

Meet Martina...

She joined Koinonia as soon as she arrived in London to study Acting & Performance at UAL. She has been an active member since then and will continue volunteering on the team next year.

Our hope is that students like Martina can always have a place where they can belong, a space to seek and grow in their faith, and a community of friends that supports, challenges, and encourages them through this season of life and beyond.

Beba grew up in Italy and decided to come study in London, just a few months after giving her life to Christ.

She, like many students, arrived seeking more than an education. She soon realised that the people she surrounded herself with would either help her grow, or pull her away from this new life she'd found.

Beba was a core member while she was a student, then went on to volunteer for a few months afterwards, becoming that same support for students who, like her, needed someone to welcome and lead them.

This is what Koinonia exists for: to provide that "home away from home" where young Christians can grow, learn, pray, and become disciples. Christians aren't formed in isolation, community is key.

'Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him.'

I often think of this moment when I get to walk alongside students. I clearly don't have all the answers, but that's okay. I can still follow what Jesus models in this scene: he listens, he asks, he walks with them, and he patiently explains.

As a staff member at Koinonia, this is one of the main ways we support students. Sometimes that looks like asking the right questions. Other times it's being a non-judgmental ear, willing to really listen. Sometimes it's a more practical kind of support, showing up like a true friend would. And sometimes it looks like explaining Scripture, sharing from my own experience, having open discussions about faith, or praying together.

We wouldn't be able to offer this to every student who comes to Koinonia without the support of people who believe in this mission.

The impact of a simple invitation...

'I first heard about Koinonia when Sully sat next to me on my first day at St. Gabriel’s church in North Acton. He asked if I knew about this community called ‘Koinonia,’ and thankfully, Andy from the same church also mentioned it. I found it very interesting and thought it would be a great community to join. It was exactly what I was searching for: a Christian community where I could share faith experiences and talk about God's love, something I felt was missing in my life growing up in a secular household and culture in Korea. So, as I was coming to London for studies and career opportunities, finding a Christian community was one of my strongest desires.

Attending the first Koinonia event, a Prayer Meeting, felt like a God-given opportunity. Here, I've discovered valuable friendships with many people who have experience living in London, managing university life, being Christians, and navigating their 20s. They offer me a lot of advice and are very welcoming and supportive, always looking out for each other. Having this support system is really necessary, especially now that I'm living away from home and my parents for the first time.

In terms of faith, I've noticed growth in being more open about my prayer life and admitting my spiritual struggles and problems. Usually, it's shameful not only when I talk to God but even more when discussing it with my friends, sharing my sins and struggles with my relationship with God. It's easy to avoid these topics, but as I participate in Koinonia's prayer meetings and worship nights, I feel freer to express my thoughts and emotions openly, not just to God but also to my friends. This has helped me develop integrity and transparency as a person and, naturally, strengthen bonds with my friends.

I used to be very reserved when it came to my faith, but I'm learning the importance of sharing my spiritual life with others, especially when we gather to worship together.'

We are living in times where pausing to just 'be still' feels almost impossible, often controversial, and more often than not, uncomfortable.

Last week, around 40 young adults from all over Europe gathered to do just that. More than acquiring knowledge or putting our gifts into practice, our aim was simply to dwell in God's presence.

Through inputs, conversations, games, shared moments, fun, music, and prayer, God reminded us once again that His love for us is unconditional. It's not about what we do, but about who we are: His sons and daughters.

'One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after...'
