Mikhael Ahmad struggled to make sense of his life and his faith. Born in Pakistan and raised a Muslim, he later embraced Roman Catholicism. After doing a retreat, he felt called to a different path and joined the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). He subsequently spent two years as a Novice, culminating with First Vows - the ultimate commitment to Jesuit life. This film tells his story...

Vocation comes from a Latin word meaning “voice” or “calling”.” Every single person in the world is called personally by God to love, reverence and serve God. Each person can discover their calling through prayer and discernment and through it, to live life to the full.

British Jesuit, Christopher Brolly, is a scholastic (in canonical studies for priesthood) who's been keeping a blog of his Jesuit formation so far. Take a look at 'InFormation' which reflects on the next phase of his journey.

We thank God for Eamonn Walls and Mikhael Ahmad as they move forward in the Society of Jesus. They recently made their first profession of vows in Birmingham after completing the two-year Jesuit novitate. Eamonn will now move to Dublin as a Scholastic (in canonical studies for priesthood) and Mikhael to Paris as a Jesuit Brother.

There are two ways of living the Jesuit Vocation: as a Jesuit Brother and as a Jesuit Priest. Both are equal. If you would like to find out more about a Jesuit vocation, see: https://www.jesuit.org.uk/who-we-are/vocations or drop an email to Fr James Conway, SJ at: [email protected]

Some of Jesuits in Britain men in formation..

The early members of the Society of Jesus conceived of their relationship with each other as friends in the Lord. This sounds odd today and I have often wondered what it concretely means. Until this week, that is, when with six other Jesuits – another Brit, an Indian, a Mexican, an Ivorian and two French – I have been running sessions on prayer and spirituality at the London Jesuit Centre. Had it not been for our shared call to the Society of Jesus, the seven of us would likely never have met, and, if we had, we would perhaps never have become friends. We are all very different. There is huge variation in our backgrounds and in our life stories, and yet we are brought together by a common call to be Jesuits, that is by a common desire to give our lives to Christ in service.

‍We’ve been calling the sessions we’re running a Faith MOT. When people arrive we welcome them and then sit down to dinner together, a dinner that we cook. Then there are sessions on different types of prayer, on friendship with God, on navigating life with God and on social justice. Finally, we bring the evening together in prayer where we review and share about our experience and about how and where God may be acting in our lives.
