We are made up of Americans working in this country, British citizens drawn to our warm fellowship, and people from more than 30 nations around the world. Sunday Story: AIC Then and Now

A few weeks ago, we received a message from someone who had been a member of AIC in the 1980s. He wrote:

“Today's sermon at my church was on Ruth. The message highlighted her staying with Naomi, coming to Bethlehem, grieving her and Naomi's loss of husband and son/spouse and how God used her life as an important cog in his plan of salvation. As I thought about the message, the American Church in London came to mind.

I was a stranger in a foreign land, my marriage had been destroyed by divorce but I was not alone. (Former Pastor) Ron Allison and the members of the American Church surrounded me and held me up. Unlike when I returned to the States they neither condemned me or my wife. The church said, "We love you, we love your wife. You are here so we will continue to love you!"

This act of Christian Fellowship helped me to go on, so today's sermon convicted me to write to you and remind you of the worth of the fellowship your church provides.”

When Pastor Jennifer wrote back to thank him for his witness, he was willing to have his story shared, as “proof that God uses His church and His people to do His work not only in Heaven but here right now.”

May we be inspired to carry on this ministry of welcome at AIC today, in the same spirit that loves without judgement or arrogance. Open. Kind. Space.

Sunday Story: Interfaith Engagement

Much of our interfaith work happens behind the scenes of our Sunday congregation, but our relationships with other faiths are key to our ministry and our Christian witness.

We regularly engage with other faith communities in the area through our staff’s participation in the Camden Interfaith Network and Faith Leaders Forum. Our staff have led London conferences called Unapologetically Faithful, exploring faith and social justice across the Abrahamic faiths. Jared has recently been on a panel at the Camden Equalities & Community Strength Forum discussing the ways that our congregation has joined other faith groups in creating connection and bringing wellbeing and resources to anyone in need.

Meanwhile, within the walls of our building, Brooke has expanded our refugee befriending programme into Interfaith Supper Clubs that are bringing together people in our local area to build a stronger community. These events are inclusive in their invitation to anyone in the area, with special guests from our partners like HostNation and Babylon Migrants Project. We have also received grant funding that allows us to hire catering chefs who have lived experience of migration.

Our own community work is more effective when we work alongside neighbours like the Muslim World League, who is often a key collaborator. Together with people of all faiths, or none, we combine our efforts and our influence to make a greater difference. But this isn’t simply utilitarian pooling of resources – our Christian witness in London is more robust when we exemplify relationships and justice for all that transcend the boundary lines where hatred and division often arise.
