From one of this morning's Psalms (63):
O God, thou art my God, early will I seek thee.
My soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh also longeth after thee, in a barren and dry land where no water is.
Thus have I looked for thee in holiness, that I might behold thy power and glory.
For thy loving-kindness is better than the life itself, my lips shall praise thee.
As long as I live will I magnify thee on this manner, and lift up my hands in thy Name.
My soul shall be satisfied, even as it were with marrow and fatness, when my mouth praiseth thee with joyful lips.
Have I not remembered thee in my bed, and thought upon thee when I was waking?
Because thou hast been my helper, therefore under the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.
My soul hangeth upon thee, thy right hand hath upholden me.

Lord help us to hunger for you, and may we always know you to be with us, in good times and in bad. Amen.

Today the Church celebrates St Barnabas, supporter of St Paul, whose name means 'son of encouragement'.
We pray for Fr Stuart and the people of St Barnabas in our parish, as he approaches his last Sunday before retirement. (His farewell Mass is 2pm on the 14th at St Barnabas).
We give thanks for his faithful service, and for the encouragement he has offered the people of Downham in their faith.

At our 10am Mass today we will be hearing the story of how Elijah defeated the prophets of Baal in a sacrifice-off, getting the Lord to set fire to his offering instead of theirs.
We pray we might not be distracted by the false prophets of our age, who focus on power and wealth, and instead follow our Lord in service of others.

Today the Church remembers Columba, born in Oreland, and missionary to the Scots.
His voice was said to be loud and melodious, able to be heard from one hill-top to another, which would have come in handy.
He is said to have performed many miracles, including defeating a large beast near Lock Ness.
He died on this say in 597 on his adopted home of the island of Iona.

Today the Church remembers Thomas Ken, hymn writer and man of conviction.
Born in Hertfordshire in 1637, he became Bishop of Bath & Wells through the unusual route of criticising King Charles II for letting his mistress stay in his lodgings!
Ken went on to come into conflict with James II for his leanings towards the Roman Catholic Church, resulting in a spell in the Tower of London.
When James was deposed, Ken didn't feel he could support William of Orange whilst the former King was alive, was stripped of his bishopric, and lived out the rest of his life in Longleat.
We give thanks for his courage in speaking truth to those in power.

Today the Church remembers Ini Kopuria who died on this day in 1945.
He started life out as a policeman, but went on to form the Melanesian Brotherhood, a religious order that serve their local communities throughout the Pacific islands.
We pray for their work, and give thanks for the faith of their founder.

Today the Church remembers Boniface, who was born in 675 in Devon.
His actual name was Winfred, Boniface being a nickname given to him by the Pope because he was fair-faced.
He ended up travelling to what is now Holland and Northern Germany, spreading the good news of Christianity to the local pagans, and became their first Archbishop.
There is a legend he invented the Christmas Tree when he chopped down a fir regarded as holy.
He was slain on this day in 754 by a party of bandits, but all they found on him were books of theology, so he is often depicted carrying a book with a sword through it.
We give thanks today for this English martyr, who had such an influence on the Germanic peoples.

Today is feast of Corpus Christi, when traditionally the sacrament is processed round the church.
We remember Christ's gift of his promise to be with us in the bread and wine of communion, and dedicate ourselves to continue to become his body on earth for others in lives of service.
