Prayer to Mary, Mother of God
Feast Day – January 01, 2026
O Mary, Mother of God,
chosen by the Father to bear His Son,
we honor you on this blessed feast day
and entrust ourselves to
your loving care.
You welcomed God’s will
with faith and humility.
Teach us to say “yes” to the Lord
in every moment of our lives,
especially as we begin this new year.
Mother of Jesus and our Mother,
intercede for our families,
pray for peace in our world,
and guide us always closer to your Son.
Cover us with your mantle of protection,
strengthen us in hope,
and lead us on the path of holiness.
Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us now and always.
Amen.
Mary, Mother of God — A New Year Entrusted to Grace
The Feast of Mary, Mother of God, celebrated on January 1st, stands at a powerful crossroads: the meeting point of the Nativity of Christ and the beginning of a new year. It is no coincidence that the Church places Mary before us on this day. Before plans are made, before resolutions are declared, before the year rushes forward, we are invited to pause and entrust everything to a Mother.
Mary is called Mother of God not as a poetic title, but as a profound truth of faith. The child she bore is fully human and fully divine. In saying “yes” to God, Mary did not merely accept a role — she accepted a mission that would shape salvation history. Her faith was not passive; it was courageous, costly, and deeply trusting.
This prayer reminds us that Mary’s greatness lies not in power or status, but in her humility. She welcomed God’s will even when the path ahead was unclear. As a new year begins, this becomes our challenge: not to control every outcome, but to cultivate hearts willing to say “yes” — again and again — in ordinary moments and unexpected trials.
The prayer also widens its gaze beyond the individual. It asks Mary to intercede for families, for peace in the world, and for guidance toward Christ. This is a sober reminder that faith is never isolated. Our choices ripple outward, touching homes, communities, and societies that ache for healing and hope.
The image of Mary’s mantle is especially striking. It symbolizes protection, tenderness, and refuge — not an escape from hardship, but the assurance that we are not alone within it. To stand under her mantle is to stand closer to Christ, strengthened to walk the demanding path of holiness with perseverance rather than fear.
Beginning the year with Mary is an act of spiritual realism. It acknowledges that human effort alone is insufficient. We need grace. We need intercession. We need a Mother who continually points us toward her Son.
As the prayer concludes, it does not ask for extraordinary signs or dramatic changes. It asks for something far more demanding and transformative: faith, hope, peace, and holiness — lived daily.
That is how a year truly becomes new.
