The world's knowledge of God is deeply ironic in Genesis 1-3. We were made to know God, as those made in God's image. But we chose the tree of the knowledge of good and evil: the tree of knowing, in the sense of choosing for ourselves that which is good and evil, rather than knowing through trusting God. (2:17) And in that choice we lost the knowledge of God that we were made for....

Having recently preached through John's gospel, I've come to the conclusion (I'm sure I'm not the first) that the links between John's Gospel and the early chapters of Genesis do not stop at 1:1 in which John uses the same language as Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning..." I'm wondering whether allusions throughout John's gospel to the early chapters of Genesis provide an atmosphere for the whole book.
I'll be exploring this thesis in a little blog I've started. In this blog I'll look at allusions that are blindingly obvious (like in 1:1) to those which are subtle and even debatable.
