There’s a quiet charm to the older sections of Putney Vale - where weathered headstones, mature trees, and winding paths hold traces of the many stories that came before us.

These historic areas offer a gentle reminder of the passage of time and the generations who have shaped this place.

A peaceful corner to wander, pause, and appreciate the heritage within our grounds.

At Putney Vale, we provide a variety of memorial options, including the dedicated Recordia Room - our quiet indoor space offering lasting tributes in a sheltered setting at the rear of the crematorium.

Here, families can choose from bronze wall plaques or leather wall plaques, available on one-year or seven-year leases. Each plaque can be personalised with a chosen inscription, with optional additions such as photo plaques or motifs on selected designs.

The Recordia Room is one of several ways to honour a loved one at Putney Vale, offering a thoughtful and dignified place for remembrance throughout the year.

If you’d like to learn more about these memorials, our team is here to help guide you through the options. Please, follow the link in bio to our website https://enablelc.org/bereavement/ or contact us on [email protected].

We’re delighted to share a little piece of good news from the Glades of Remembrance: Putney Vale now has its own hedgehog house, kindly provided by EcoRest and Monumental Additions (MonAdd) as part of their nationwide campaign to make remembrance spaces greener and more wildlife-friendly 🦔💚

Hedgehogs are one of Britain’s most loved native species - but they urgently need our help. Rural populations have dropped by 50% since 2000, and urban numbers by around a third. Simple habitat improvements in managed green spaces can make a real difference, offering:
• Safe nesting and hibernation spots
• Refuge in fragmented green areas
• Low-effort, high-impact support for hedgehog survival

Our new hedgehog home is made from EarthBond recycled granite, a sustainable material designed for longevity, and it’s now nestled in a shaded, quiet corner where these shy creatures can safely shelter.

This initiative is part of a wider effort to bring more biodiversity into remembrance landscapes - creating small sanctuaries that benefit both wildlife and the people who visit our grounds.

A huge thank-you to and the EcoRest team for including Putney Vale in this project. You can follow their wider campaign to support hedgehogs across Britain at monadd.co.uk/ecorest.

We hope this little home becomes a safe haven for hedgehogs who pass through our grounds - and a reminder of how thoughtful changes in green spaces can make a lasting impact 🌿✨

Today, we pause to remember the service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives in conflict. Within Putney Vale Cemetery, the Commonwealth War Graves Memorial and the surrounding graves, lovingly maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, stand as a lasting tribute to the courage of men and women who served in both World Wars.

These quiet spaces offer us a moment to reflect on bravery, commitment, and the enduring value of peace - reminders that are as important today as ever.

"At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them." — Laurence Binyon

Let us take a moment to honour their memory and cherish the peace they fought to protect.

It’s Halloween today - a day that invites reflection as much as celebration.

As October draws to a close, Halloween invites us to pause and reflect on the changing seasons - and the delicate balance between life and death. What began centuries ago as Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest, was a time to honour ancestors and prepare for the darker months ahead. Fires were lit, candles placed in windows, and families gathered to remember those who came before.

Across the world, similar traditions continue to this day. In Mexico, DĂa de los Mu***os - the Day of the Dead - transforms streets and homes with colour, candles, and marigolds, celebrating the enduring bond between the living and the departed. In Japan, Obon sees lanterns released to guide spirits home. Each culture, in its own way, reminds us that remembrance is an act of love - and that memory keeps connection alive.

Halloween, then, is not only a night of costumes and folklore, but also a moment to reflect - on change, on continuity, and on the stories that make us who we are. Whether through light, silence, or shared memories, it’s a time to honour the past and welcome the peace that reflection brings.

Discovery begins with curiosity.

Did you know the first British Nobel Prize winner for Medicine rests at Putney Vale Cemetery?

Sir Ronald Ross (1857–1932) was a physician, researcher, and poet whose groundbreaking work transformed the understanding of infectious disease. While serving in the Indian Medical Service, he discovered in 1897 that malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes - a revelation that changed the course of public health and saved countless lives.

Awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1902, Ross became the first Briton to receive the honour. His research laid the foundations for malaria control worldwide, and his later years were devoted to teaching and advocating for tropical medicine in London.

The story of Sir Ronald Ross is one of discovery and dedication. In the quiet of Putney Vale Cemetery lies a man whose work continues to save lives. Visit his resting place at Grave 1129, Block AS and reflect on a legacy that still shapes science today. 🌿

9-15 October marks Baby Loss Awareness Week - a time to remember every baby who has died too soon and to raise awareness of the impact of pregnancy and baby loss.
This year’s theme, “Together, we care”, highlights the importance of compassion - caring for ourselves and for one another as part of a supportive community.
At Putney Vale Cemetery, a memorial raised by stands as a lasting tribute to all babies lost too soon.

Sands also invites everyone to join the Global Wave of Light on Wednesday at 7pm - lighting a candle for one hour to remember and reflect on every little life that will never be forgotten.

For more information and ways to get involved, visit sands.org.uk/blaw.

News from one of the cemeteries managed by Enable - Morden Cemetery.

Last month, Morden Cemetery welcomed the team from Oakwood Clydesdales, who brought their beautiful heavy horses to mow and bale the site’s two wild meadows.
Many visitors stopped to watch as the traditional method of working with horsepower brought a touch of heritage to the grounds - a reminder of how nature and history can come together in everyday care for green spaces.

Although the wet weather meant no wildflower seeds could be collected this time, we look forward to brighter conditions next year and seeing the meadows flourish once again.
