Colossians 3:16-17
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

๐Ÿ™Cultivate the culture!๐Ÿ™

Do it for the culture โ€“ Part 4

When God appoints us, he sees us under the anointing, covered by the sacrifice of the Son. It is under his covering so to speak that we are animated by His Spirit to do his will. The moment we begin to see ourselves in partnership with God, low self-perception will be easier to fight off. We then recognise that we are not just a man, or just a woman, or just an older person, or just a youth for that matterโ€ฆwe are far more powerful than we can imagine. The scripture in Joel shows us what people will and can do when in partnership with heavenโ€ฆ Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

We have the power to see (thatโ€™s vision), the power to speak (thatโ€™s prophecy). Prophecy is not just a foretelling of the not yet, prophecy is an ability to speak to the culture you are placed within. If we think about the Spirit that animated John the Baptist, it was a spirit to tell it as it is. John spoke openly of the fact that King Herod was unfaithful with his brotherโ€™s wife. When confronted by the Pharisees, he told them to their faces that they were a group of snakes, because of how they were operating in Judea at the time. So, prophecy, is also speaking truth to the powerful, which in some ways, is speaking directly to โ€˜the cultureโ€™.

So, by the Holy Spirit, we are given the ability to see whatโ€™s wrong with the culture and to speak prophetically, in other words, to call it out. Under the anointing of divine partnership, we are called to cultivate the culture. What do we mean by cultivate? Well, the word โ€˜cultivateโ€™ at its root means to prepare, to upturn, to make ready for seed. This is what speaking prophetically does. If you recall, what did John the Baptist say his purpose was, it was to be, โ€˜โ€œA voice of one calling in the wilderness and to โ€˜Prepare the way for the Lord... [and to]โ€ฆ make straight paths for Him.โ€™โ€ By speaking prophetically, John the Baptist was upturning, making ready the soil of โ€˜the cultureโ€™ and preparing it for seed.

And what is the seed? The seed isnโ€™t an โ€˜itโ€™, the seed is a โ€˜whoโ€™, the good news resides in a person...

Our saviour Jesus Christ, the anointed one.

Whatโ€™s Love Got to do with it (PART 3)

Even though 1 Corinthians 13:11 was written to the Corinthian church in 53-55 AD, this does have relevance to us today. It is a good opportunity for us to examine ourselves? Some of us have been in the church for a while now, we know the songs by heart, we can say the scriptures word for word, but are we truly examining our maturity in God? It doesnโ€™t matter how old we are, before God none of us are full-grown. None are exempt from self-examination. What does my walk with God look like at 16? At 20? At 25? Or even at 50? When Abraham was 86 and begat Ishmael there was still room to grow, he would be 100 years old when he would truly be tested. Moses would live roughly a third of his life in the palace, another in the wilderness of Midian, but it was only in his last innings that he would become the liberator he was destined to be. So, we should all be asking, what should my walk with God look like now? What still needs to be done after my begat? We donโ€™t ever want to feel like weโ€™ve plateaued and that we are not growing.

There is great gain being disciples of our own experiences with God. According to St Anselm (a Christian philosopher in the late 10th century) all believers are theologians in a sense, all are required to enquire of God, to know more of Him and by extension, to know themselves. In order to understand our God more, our faith must seek understanding. We must aim to live everyday of our lives in the spirit of Mosesโ€™ request to God in Exodus 33:18 (โ€˜now show me your gloryโ€™). The aim of the maturing Christian then, is to do what Jesus said in Matthew 22:37, to โ€œlove the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind.โ€ Once this happens then the body will praise God from a deep centre of worship. In the same way perhaps, we have to re-examine our understanding of love. Love is not just a raw emotion untethered from reason, weโ€™ve got to engage the heart and the mind when loving God. It is in the same way that we should love each other. When we engage the mind as well as the emotions, we are able to better direct our love. Afterall, it is the head that keeps the heart grounded.

THE FEAR OF PURPOSE (PART 2)

Can we live our best life without knowing the life giver?

God speaks to our self-doubt with His self-assurance. He did the same for Moses when he said, โ€œI Am Who I Am.โ€ Here, Moses in his humanity is confronted with God's divinity. God answered his โ€˜WHO AM I?โ€™ question with an affirmation of WHO HE IS. Itโ€™s like God was saying, โ€˜if you know WHO I AM, you will discover WHO YOU ARE.โ€™ God was telling him that He is beyond time, space and matter and that He stood outside of everything Moses has ever and could ever understand. In other words, his whole reason for being was wrapped up in God.

When God tells Moses in Exodus 3:14 that he should โ€œtell the people of Israel that I Am has sent me to you,โ€ it was designed to comfort him and to shatter FEAR. To let him know that He had his back, that he was not alone. Moses was chosen for this time and was much more than he thought he was. His potential to develop into the person God knew he could be could not be achieved through his limited understanding of himself.

The same way God knew Moses' capacity he knows ours. Proverbs 8:29 speaks about the boundaries God puts on the sea. Psalms 26:2 speaks of the boundary God puts on the writer of the Psalms. This should be a comfort to us, that God knows our capacities. When we bow at the feet of infinite capacity, we are bound to live our lives to the limit. A seed in the expanse of the soil can grow to its potential within it. A stream can flow into the bigness of a river, the third rock from the sun, can thrive within an ever-expanding universe.

What does this mean for us? Let us meet with God. Let us be exposed more and more to the I AM, so that we can understand WHO WE ARE and live our best life.

Can a wilderness be both a season we experience and a place we walk through?

Wilderness Experience (PART 2 of 3)

Not all deserts look or even feel the same, the Sahara is hot, Antarctica is cold, the Gobi Desert, is both hot and cold, but a desert is a wilderness and a wilderness by its very nature is a lonely place. We can find one anywhere, in the suburbs, the inner city, at home, abroad. A wilderness experience can be had in riches, in poverty, when the cupboard is full, when weโ€™re running on empty, in the madness of crowds or when we only have ourselves for company.

In Deuteronomy 8 v 1-3, before the children of Israel were able to inherit the land that God had promised their ancestors, Moses reminded them of their own wilderness experience. Moses said, โ€œRemember how the Lord your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands.โ€ The wilderness can be both a season we experience and at the same time a testing place. This test is not for Godโ€™s benefit, but according to scripture can be our character-building opportunity and our moment of true reflection.

We are humbled, our judgements are turned inward, our vulnerabilities and shortcomings exposed. This is not simply for us to feel small or even worthless, even though we may feel that way, but it is a moment that shows us how much we need God above all else, to live.

Would you agree? Is this how you would describe a wilderness experience?

Sit_Walk_Stand (PART 2)
Ephesians 2:1-9

While under house arrest for preaching Christ, he encouraged the Christians in Ephesus to adopt three positions: sitting, WALKING, standing...

He put it this way, before we met Christ, we WALKED like so many in this world, fulfilling our own desires. Now, we can move to WALKING in this new way of life.

As we sit in heavenly places in Christ, we also WALK out our faith here on earth. This is all done from that place of rest. As we remain in Christ, our position of rest assures us that we have the power to walk worthy of Him. POWER WALKING MEANS GOD IS WORKING THROUGH US. As we trust and rely on Him, His desires become our desires. In Ephesians, we are encouraged by Paul to walk in a practical way working out our heavenly position here on earth.

In other words, we are in the world, but not of it. "We walk not as others walk...wandering far from the life God gives, because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him." Ephesians 4:18 (NLT)

We, on the other hand, are to โ€œ...put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness (Ephesians 4:24).โ€ We, like Christ, donโ€™t live to please ourselves, but WALK in love as we live here on earth. Our lives lived out in a way that smells sweet to God. The whole principle of the Christian life is going beyond doing what is right in our own eyes. It is doing what is pleasing to God.

And so, this is why and how...

WE WALK.
