Meet Celena- a member of our NLCB family!

I met Jesus in my early twenties. As a family, we believed in God and prayed to Him each day. I thought I was a Christian. However, from the time I left school to working, I’d been struggling with a deep inferiority complex that got progressively worse over the years. I constantly thought and believed that ‘there’s no way God could love me because I’m not good enough! Plus, if I made a mistake while learning, or did or said something that was morally wrong, I would berate myself, even calling myself names. Yet, a verse from scripture continually tugged at my heartstrings, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29

Gradually, the berating damaged me so deeply, that I’d started planning un-alive myself. The Lord met me the night I was about to act on it. Before going to sleep, I’d just begun saying the Lord’s prayer, as we’d been taught as kids.

I didn’t finish. Instead, Jesus’ unbelievable peace filled my heart and mind and I found myself saying to Him, “God’s just touched me! “I’m not guilty anymore, I’ve been forgiven! I knew right there, I’d been forgiven all my wrong doing (sins). The weight of them had been completely lifted.

Over the time, the Lord began to gently confront me about the way I was speaking of myself. That I had to renew my mind, accepting and speaking His word of who I am to Him; i.e. I had to stop berating myself. He showed me I’d been doing the enemy’s work for him by this behaviour.

I’d begun to learn that, yes, I am not, nor could I ever be, ‘good enough’ for God to love me; and that when I fall short of His ways, instead of attacking myself with my tongue, I need to confess my sins to Him for, ‘If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness’ 1 John 1:19

Today, I’m so encouraged by the Lord’s word Romans 8:38-39. He continues to prove that there isn’t anything that can separate me from His love.

Meet Funmi- a member of our NLCB family!

“Although I had known about Jesus from a young age and was christened in an Anglican church in Peckham, I did not truly know Him personally. When my mum became ill with cancer in 1992–1993, I watched her friends faithfully pray for her healing. When she passed away in August 1993, I was angry with God. I felt He had not answered those prayers and had abandoned our family.

Shortly after her funeral, I started secondary school and my paternal grandmother came to live with us. She became the person God used to introduce me to Him in a deeper way. Every morning before school, she led us in devotions, teaching us scriptures such as the Lord’s Prayer, Psalm 23, John 3:16, and Romans 6:23. She also took us to her Baptist church, where I experienced the love of God through His people. For the first time, I felt truly seen, welcomed, and loved.

As a teenager, I still struggled to believe. Around the age of 14 or 15, I found myself in a situation where I was expected to fight a boy because of pressure from others. Not wanting to fight, I prayed, “God, if You are real, make it so that I don’t have to do this.” He answered that prayer, and I never had to fight, yet I still was not fully convinced.

In 1997, after my grandmother returned to Nigeria, our family began attending a Baptist church in Stockwell. Through the faithful preaching and teaching of God’s Word, my heart became hungry to know more about Jesus. I attended baptismal classes, and it was there that I surrendered my life to Christ and gave Him my heart.

Since then, Jesus has walked with me through both the greatest joys and the deepest valleys of life. He has never left me, even in seasons when I struggled to see His hand. I am forever grateful for His love, grace, and sacrifice on the cross, where He took my sin, shame, and guilt so that I could be reconciled to God and spend eternity with Him. If salvation were the only gift Jesus ever gave me, it would be more than enough. I am eternally thankful that He called me, saved me, and continues to hold me fast. ✝️❤️”

Meet Raekwon- a member of our NLCB family!

“Before I met Jesus I was a slave to lust, two faced and a liar with zero direction of where to go. I felt as though I was just floating through life with no foundation always afraid of how I was perceived by others.

I always knew about God and Jesus growing up, however I properly met Jesus in my first year of University! After watching and studying Christian apologetics, learning the historisity and how deep the core theology is, I just found following Christ so fascinating! With my love for music production and music writing, I decided to use this skill to put out the Gospel to others, it can’t be only me hearing this good news!”

You can find Raekwon’s music under the artist name Vanjel!
