The Chapel of St John of Wapping

The Chapel of St John of Wapping A chapel at the base of the bell tower of St John's of Wapping Originally a Chapel of Ease to St Mary’s Whitechapel.

St John’s became the Parish Church of Wapping in 1694. The current tower was constructed by Joel Johnson in 1756, and is considered one of the oldest buildings in Wapping. Sadly, the Church took a direct hit from a bomb in the Second World War, with only the Bell Tower surviving. The Tower was restored and became part of the Parish of St Peter’s London Docks in 1964. The Tower has been featured in

Movies and TV-shows, such as an episode of the American Series called “Friends.” Flats were built around the Tower on the footprint of the Church in the late 1990’s. There is a Chapel on the ground floor of the Bell Tower, and though there have not been services inside the chapel for some years, services have resumed since July 2023.

The Blessing Rite used for the Re-opening of St Johns Chapel after WW2 was recently discovered in our parish archives. Meaning the photos previously posted, were of this special event.
In light of this discovery, it is the wishes and hopes of the PCC and clergy that we honour the prayers made of keeping this chapel as a refuge for thy faithful people of Wapping, as a place of prayer and worship, forever set apart from all common and profane uses, to be forever a sanctuary and beacon of light and hope in Wapping.

We have recently discovered in the parish archives, a copy of the January 1917 edition of the Wapping Parish Church Monthly Magazine. Because of this discovery, we can see an indication of what St John’s Church used to look like inside, and what a magnificent sanctuary it used to have. It also gives us a glimpse into the lives of the people of Wapping during the First World War. We have posted here the cover and just a few pages from the magazine, but we have created a PDF version of the whole magazine. If anyone would like a copy of the PDF version, send us an email to [email protected] and we will happily send you a copy.

A dozen men from the parish of St Peter’s, London Docks, with St John of Wapping, have joined together this year in keeping ‘Movember’. Movember is “the leading charity that is changing the face of men’s health. We know what works for men and what doesn’t.” The goal? To raise funds and awareness through sponsored moustache growing during the month of November. The initial meeting took place with a dozen men in the local pub, with good friendships being built up in the process. If you would like to support the campaign please visit the St Peter’s, London Docks website.

Please keep the Chapel of St John’s in your prayers today. As the clergy and PCC have an important meeting with the diocese on the future of this place.

Almighty God, we thank you for the generations of parishioners and clergy of St John’s of Wapping who have served your people in this place. We thank you for saving this tower during the Blitz. We pray for understanding in discerning your purpose for this place, give us the humility to seek and hear the wise counsel of others. We ask this through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Yesterday Fr Bailey went to see the Apple TV film the Blitz at the Barbican. He is proud to report that the tower of St John’s prominently features in the film as the parish church of the family the film is based around. St John’s was destroyed in the Blitz with the tower surviving, which is what is portrayed in the film, though in the film it’s based in Stepney Green. Would highly recommend people to see this film whilst in it is in the cinemas.
