St Cuthbert (634-687), monk, bishop, and hermit, is the patron saint of Northumbria and of Durham Cathedral. He became prior of Lindisfarne in 664 and was in great demand as a spiritual guide. But his devotion to a life of prayer led Cuthbert to give up his office and become a hermit. On the remote island of Inner Farne he built a hermitage where he lived for ten years.

Cuthbert was known as a man of great kindness and holiness, and in 685 he was chosen by the king and the Archbishop of Canterbury to be the Bishop of Hexham. He reluctantly agreed and for the next two years travelled extensively throughout his diocese, preaching and teaching and ministering to the poor and the sick.

He became ill and, sensing that death was approaching, he retired back to the hermitage on Inner Farne where he died on 20 March 687. He was buried on Lindisfarne and eleven years later, when the body was exhumed for reburial in the church at Lindisfarne, the body was found to be uncorrupted. Today, the shrine of Saint Cuthbert is to be found in Durham Cathedral.

“Always preserve divine charity among yourselves, and when you come together to discuss your common affairs, let your principal goal be to reach a unanimous decision” (Final words of Saint Cuthbert)

Lectionary 31 Aug: St Aidan of Lindisfarne (d. 651), a monk and missionary who helped establish Christianity in northern England.

Originally a monk on the Scottish island of Iona, Aidan was invited by King Oswald of Northumbria to become bishop. Aidan founded a monastery on Lindisfarne. From there he travelled widely, often on foot, preaching, establishing churches and training new Christian leaders.
