Hebrews 5:12–14

INTRODUCTION

Spiritual growth is one of the fundamental expectations of the Christian life. Salvation introduces a believer into a new life in Christ, but God never intended that believers remain spiritually immature. Just as physical life requires growth and development, spiritual life also demands continual progress.

The Apostle Peter, at the close of his second epistle, exhorts believers with a powerful command: “grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” This instruction reveals that growth is not optional in the Christian life; it is a divine requirement.

Growth in grace shapes the believer's character and conduct, while growth in knowledge deepens understanding of Christ and His truth. Both are necessary for spiritual maturity and stability in the faith.

This study will therefore examine three major dimensions/parts of spiritual development:

1. Understanding what it means to grow in grace

2. Growing in the knowledge of Christ

3. Understanding the process of spiritual growth

TODAY PART 1: Understanding What It Means to Grow in Grace

Focus:

To understand how God's grace works in the believer's life to produce spiritual maturity and Christlike character.

Grace is more than the unmerited favor of God; it is also the divine enablement that empowers believers to live according to God's will. Growing in grace means increasing in spiritual strength, maturity, humility, and dependence upon God.

A. GRACE PRODUCES SPIRITUAL TRANSFORMATION

The grace that saves also transforms the believer's life.

Titus 2:11–12
"For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world."

Grace teaches believers to:

Reject ungodliness

Overcome worldly desires

Live righteous and godly lives

Therefore, growing in grace means allowing the influence of God's grace to continually transform one's character.

B. GRACE STRENGTHENS BELIEVERS FOR SPIRITUAL LIVING

Grace empowers believers to live victoriously over sin and temptation.

2 Corinthians 12:9
"My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness."

As believers grow in grace:

They depend more on God

They develop spiritual strength

They overcome spiritual weaknesses

C. GRACE PRODUCES CHRISTLIKE CHARACTER

Growth in grace gradually produces the character of Christ in the believer.

Galatians 5:22–23

The fruit of the Spirit becomes evident through:

Love

Joy

Peace

Patience

Kindness

Faithfulness

Meekness

Self-control

These virtues are signs of spiritual maturity.

CONCLUSION:

God's desire is that every believer grows continually in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Spiritual stagnation is contrary to God's will for His children.

Through grace, believers are transformed in character; through knowledge, they gain understanding of God's truth; and through spiritual discipline, they progress toward maturity.

Therefore, every believer must actively pursue spiritual growth through the Word of God, prayer, obedience, and fellowship with other believers.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION:
What practical steps can believers take to grow in grace daily?

PRAYER:
Father, help me to grow daily in Your grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ.

CPRC SWORD OF THE SPIRIT DAILY DEVOTION

DATE: FRIDAY NOVEMBER 21ST 2025

TOPIC: THE HORROR OF HELL (PART THREE)

MEMORY VERSE:
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." — Romans 6:23 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Romans 6:15–23

INTRODUCTION
The horror of hell is a frightening reality—but one that God, in His mercy, has provided a way of escape from. Through Jesus Christ, we are offered eternal life instead of eternal separation from God.

DISCUSSION
In Romans 6:15–23, Paul contrasts two masters: sin and righteousness.

1. Sin Leads To Bo***ge And Death.
Every act of sin tightens the chain, and its final reward is spiritual death—a separation from God in hell.

2. Obedience To God Leads To Righteousness And Life.
When we yield ourselves to God, we become servants of righteousness, producing holiness.

3. The Wages Vs. The Gift.
Wages are earned—sin pays its servants with death.
Gift is unearned—God freely offers eternal life through Jesus Christ.

This passage reminds us that although hell is real, Christ is the escape. Salvation is not a reward for good behavior; it is God’s gracious gift to all who believe.

CONCLUSION
Hell is a destination reserved for those who reject God’s offer of salvation. But through Jesus Christ, eternal life is freely given. May we choose Christ and escape the eternal horrors of hell.

PRAYER POINT
Dear Heavenly Father, help me to turn fully to Jesus and avoid the horror of hell. Amen.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Acts 5–7

*🔔CPRC MORNING DEVOTION*

*DATE: THURSDAY NOVEMBER 20TH 2025*

*TOPIC: THE HORROR OF HELL (PART TWO)*

*Memory Verse:*
_"And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom."_ – Luke 16:23 (KJV)

*Bible Passage:*
Luke 16:19–31

*Introduction*
The horror of hell is real and irreversible. Scripture shows it as a place of conscious, eternal torment—a destination no soul should desire or take lightly.

*Discussion*
In Luke 16:19–31, Jesus gives a sobering account of the rich man and Lazarus. While Lazarus found comfort in Abraham’s bosom, the rich man opened his eyes in hell—not in unconsciousness, not in annihilation, but in torment.

KEY TRUTHS REVEALED IN THIS PASSAGE:

*1. Hell Is a Place of Conscious Torment* (Luke 16:23)

The rich man lifted up his eyes. He felt, saw, and pleaded. Hell is not symbolic—it is a place of living reality.

*2. No Help Can Reach Hell* (Luke 16:24–26)

The rich man begged for a drop of water, but none could cross over.
A great gulf fixed shows that hell is a final and eternal separation.

*3. Earthly Status Does Not Determine Eternal Destination* (Luke 16:19–22)

The rich man had wealth, comfort, and honour on earth, yet ended in hell.
Lazarus suffered on earth but gained eternal comfort.
What matters is relationship with Christ, not possessions.

*4. Hell Produces Regret But Offers No Second Chance* (Luke 16:27–31)

The rich man remembered his brothers and wanted them warned.
Hell comes with memory, regret, and eternal helplessness—but no repentance after death.

*Conclusion*
The account of the rich man is a divine warning. Hell is not a myth but a certainty for all who reject God’s salvation. May we live daily with eternity in view and choose the path that leads to life.

*Prayer Point*
Dear Heavenly Father, help me to escape the place of torment and live daily in the fear of God. Amen.
