INTRODUCTION
Spiritual growth is one of the fundamental expectations of the Christian life. Salvation introduces a believer into a new life in Christ, but God never intended that believers remain spiritually immature. Just as physical life requires growth and development, spiritual life also demands continual progress.
The Apostle Peter, at the close of his second epistle, exhorts believers with a powerful command: “grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” This instruction reveals that growth is not optional in the Christian life; it is a divine requirement.
Growth in grace shapes the believer's character and conduct, while growth in knowledge deepens understanding of Christ and His truth. Both are necessary for spiritual maturity and stability in the faith.
This study will therefore examine three major dimensions/parts of spiritual development:
1. Understanding what it means to grow in grace
2. Growing in the knowledge of Christ
3. Understanding the process of spiritual growth
TODAY PART 1: Understanding What It Means to Grow in Grace
Focus:
To understand how God's grace works in the believer's life to produce spiritual maturity and Christlike character.
Grace is more than the unmerited favor of God; it is also the divine enablement that empowers believers to live according to God's will. Growing in grace means increasing in spiritual strength, maturity, humility, and dependence upon God.
A. GRACE PRODUCES SPIRITUAL TRANSFORMATION
The grace that saves also transforms the believer's life.
Titus 2:11–12
"For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world."
Grace teaches believers to:
Reject ungodliness
Overcome worldly desires
Live righteous and godly lives
Therefore, growing in grace means allowing the influence of God's grace to continually transform one's character.
B. GRACE STRENGTHENS BELIEVERS FOR SPIRITUAL LIVING
Grace empowers believers to live victoriously over sin and temptation.
2 Corinthians 12:9
"My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness."
As believers grow in grace:
They depend more on God
They develop spiritual strength
They overcome spiritual weaknesses
C. GRACE PRODUCES CHRISTLIKE CHARACTER
Growth in grace gradually produces the character of Christ in the believer.
Galatians 5:22–23
The fruit of the Spirit becomes evident through:
Love
Joy
Peace
Patience
Kindness
Faithfulness
Meekness
Self-control
These virtues are signs of spiritual maturity.
CONCLUSION:
God's desire is that every believer grows continually in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Spiritual stagnation is contrary to God's will for His children.
Through grace, believers are transformed in character; through knowledge, they gain understanding of God's truth; and through spiritual discipline, they progress toward maturity.
Therefore, every believer must actively pursue spiritual growth through the Word of God, prayer, obedience, and fellowship with other believers.
QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION:
What practical steps can believers take to grow in grace daily?
PRAYER:
Father, help me to grow daily in Your grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ.
