This is the agony of the cross; Jesus cried out as he was separated from the Godhead - the community of love which was all he had previously known.

"Thus divine life is communal in nature: it consists in entering a community. To live, for the Christian, is to ‘live with’. The Christian vocation is a ‘con-vocation’. Besides being a juridical and hierarchical community, and at a more fundamental level, the Church is this community of life and love, the new people of God, the body of Christ. This is a new area of relationships among men, immensely more intimate, lasting and universal. These relationships are so close that they make of those who love each other one organism, one man almost, not, however, in the purely psychological or moral sense, but in the ontological sense. They become like branches of the same vine, members of the same body. Jesus compares the unity that binds Christians to that which binds the Three Divine Persons. These relationships will never be destroyed. They are destined to intensify and explode into joyous eternal communion. They do not just bind a small part of mankind, but are destined to create links between all men, between past and present, present and future. Mankind becomes a single great reality on the march. The whole of history seems to be penetrated by this vast unifying movement in which the process of socialization finds its deepest meaning."
