PRAYER AS A WEAPON OF SPIRITUAL WARFARE

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
— Matthew 26:41

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.”
— Ephesians 6:18

*INTRODUCTION*

The Christian life is not a life without battles. We live in a spiritual world, and the Bible makes it clear that believers must remain spiritually alert.

Paul says:

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world…” — Ephesians 6:12
Prayer is one of the major weapons God has given His people for spiritual warfare.

Prayer does not mean that we fight people. Our battle is not against human beings. Prayer enables us to stand in God's strength, resist the enemy, overcome temptation, receive divine strength and intercede for others.

Jesus told His disciples:

Watch and pray…”
He knew that temptation, fear and pressure were coming. Their greatest need was not merely physical strength but spiritual preparation.

A prayerless believer can become spiritually careless.

But a praying believer becomes watchful, sensitive and strengthened.

Prayer prepares us before the battle, sustains us during the battle, and gives us thanksgiving after the victory.

*PRAYER KEEPS US SPIRITUALLY ALERT*

Jesus said:

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation.” — Matthew 26:41
To watch means to remain spiritually awake.

Prayer helps us recognize:

temptation,

wrong influences,

spiritual attacks,

dangerous decisions,

and opportunities to do God's will.
Many people recognize a problem only after they have entered it. Prayer helps us become sensitive before the problem becomes destructive. A praying believer is a watchful believer.

Prayer keeps our spiritual eyes open.

*PRAYER GIVES US STRENGTH TO OVERCOME TEMPTATION*

Jesus said:

The spirit is willing.

PRAYER AS A CHANNEL FOR DIVINE DIRECTION AND WISDOM

Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”
— Jeremiah 33:3

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally.”
— James 1:5

*INTRODUCTION*

One of the divine purposes of prayer is to bring the believer into God's direction and wisdom.

Life is filled with decisions. We have to make choices concerning relationships, ministry, family, business, education, career, finances and our future. Human knowledge can help us make plans, but only God knows the end from the beginning.

This is why prayer is essential.

Prayer is not only where we tell God what we want. It is also where we position ourselves to hear, receive, understand and follow His direction.

The Bible says:

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6
Many mistakes can be avoided when we learn to pray before we act.

Sometimes a door looks attractive but is not God's door.

Sometimes an opportunity appears good but is not God's assignment.

Sometimes something seems delayed because God is preparing something better.

Therefore, the praying believer learns to ask:

“Lord, what do You want?”

rather than only:

“Lord, what do I want?”

Prayer brings our plans under God's authority.

*PRAYER ACKNOWLEDGES THAT GOD KNOWS BETTER THAN WE DO*

Human understanding is limited.

We see today; God sees tomorrow.

We see the opportunity; God sees the consequences.

We see the beginning; God sees the entire journey.

Therefore, prayer begins with humility.
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5
A person who refuses to pray may eventually make decisions based entirely on emotions, pressure, appearances or human reasoning.
