Everybody has a thorn (1)
18 FEBRUARY 2025
‘‘A thorn in the flesh was given to me.’’
2 Corinthians 12:7 NKJV
Paul writes: ‘A thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me…For when I am weak, then I am strong’ (vv. 7-10 NKJV). Paul had such great faith that when he prayed, the sick were healed and the dead were raised. Yet, he prayed repeatedly that God would remove his ‘thorn in the flesh’, and God said no. Why? To keep him humble and make him totally dependent on God. We don’t know what Paul’s thorn in the flesh was, but we know why he had it: ‘Lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations’ (v. 7 NKJV). When God blesses you greatly, with it comes the risk of pride. And with God, that’s a disqualifier. If you have ever had a splinter in your finger, you know it throbs with pain and constantly irritates you. Can you live with it? Yes. Would you rather not? Yes. Note what Paul says: ‘A thorn in the flesh was given to me.’ Not only does he come to see his thorn as a grace developer, but a gift that does two things: 1) Humbles us and makes us more dependent on God. 2) Makes us more tolerant and gracious since everybody has a thorn.

Everybody has a thorn (2)
19 FEBRUARY 2025
‘‘Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.’’
Ephesians 6:10 NLT
Paul tells us two things about his thorn: First, that it was a messenger of Satan sent to buffet him. The word ‘buffet’ means ‘to render blow after blow’. It was not one battle, but a series of back-to-back attacks that didn’t let up. Satan knows your weakest areas, and he will repeatedly attack you in those areas. How can you defeat him? The Bible tells: ‘Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armour so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places’ (vv. 10-12 NLT). Second, that the thorn was in his ‘flesh’. You are a regenerate spirit, living in an unregenerate body. That’s why the Bible commands us to crucify the flesh, starve the flesh, and refuse to give in to the impulses of the flesh. And in God’s strength you can do it: ‘By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvellous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires’ (2 Peter 1:3-4 NLT).

Get back on track
16 NOVEMBER 2025
‘‘Do not think about the past. Look at the new thing I am going to do.’’
Isaiah 43:18-19 NCV
It’s time to get back in touch with who you really are and your God-given gifts. This may mean confronting certain things you may dislike about yourself and your present situation. Beginning the process is the most difficult part. One approach to do that is to stop seeing yourself as you or others see you, and instead see yourself as God views you. Your vision for yourself is one of the first things that disappears when life gets hard, when you get stuck in sickness or debt or unhappiness. So, get back in touch with that vision! And where you see a disconnection between who you are and how you are currently living, drop the blame and self-accusation for getting off track. Once you do, you will start to detect that what’s inside you is now outside as well, showing in your life. Who you are behind closed doors develops into who you are everywhere. Let yourself see yourself as fresh and new, willing to begin again. Start taking one step at a time. When you see yourself the way God does, you see yourself standing up to say, ‘I am here and ready to use my gifts to live the life I was intended for!’ That puts you in agreement with God who says: ‘Forget what happened before, and do not think about the past. Look at the new thing I am going to do. It is already happening. Don’t you see it? I will make a road in the desert and rivers in the dry land.’

Speak ‘life’ (2)
15 NOVEMBER 2025
‘‘Let the weak say, “I am strong.”’’
Joel 3:10 NKJV
Notice that the Bible doesn’t say, ‘Let the weak call their friends and discuss their weaknesses.’ Or, ‘Let the weak talk about their weaknesses.’ Or, ‘Let the weak whine about their weaknesses.’ No, it basically says, ‘Let the weak say the opposite of how they feel.’ So instead of talking about the way you are, talk about the way you desire to be. Talk about what God’s Word says you can be, have, and experience. If you get up each morning feeling exhausted and beaten down, instead of groaning about it, you need to declare, ‘I am strong in the Lord. This is the day that the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it’ (see Psalm 118:24). When you do that, you will not only alter how you feel but also your attitude. You won’t step into the day with a tired, defeated mentality. You will go out with a winning mentality, with a bounce in your step, with a grin on your face, and with your shoulders squared. When God’s Word becomes your word, it will lift your spirit and help you see yourself and your situations a whole new way. Jesus said, ‘Whoever says to this mountain, “Be removed and be cast into the sea,” and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says’ (Mark 11:23 NKJV). Note the words ‘he will have whatever he says’. So, each day look in the mirror and say, ‘Good morning you blessed, strong, secure, confident, highly favoured child of God.’ In other words, speak ‘life’.

Get up and try again
26 OCTOBER 2025
‘A righteous man may fall seven times and rise again.’
Proverbs 24:16 NKJV

Thomas Edison conducted thousands of experiments with various kinds of materials in his search for a filament he could use in carbon incandescent lamps. As each fibre failed, he would throw it out the window until, eventually, his pile of failures stretched all the way up to the second storey of his house. Then about thirteen months after his first failure, he succeeded in finding a filament that could stand the stress of electric current.

And here is how it happened: he nonchalantly picked up a tad of lampblack, mixed it with tar, rolled it into a delicate thread, and wondered, ‘Why not try a carbonised filter?’ He worked for five hours straight to craft a fibre, but it broke into two pieces before he detached the mould. He used up two spools of cotton thread before developing a perfect strand, only to damage it when he attempted to put it inside the glass tube. He stayed awake for two days and nights before he succeeded in slipping one of the carbonised threads into a vacuum-sealed bulb. Then, turning on the current, he observed the glow of electric light that we now take for granted.

A failure doesn’t need to suggest the end; it can mean you’re one step closer to the triumph you desire. If something you have attempted has failed, try again. Consider a new perspective. Allow time for an idea to sit and simmer. Take notes. Never give up the goals and dreams you believe in. God is with you through the detours and delays (see Hebrews 13:5-6). When you make determination your friend, patience your servant, and God your partner – you will succeed!

Be prudent; use forethought
25 OCTOBER 2025
‘‘The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways.’’
Proverbs 14:8 NIV
Solomon writes: ‘The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways.’ ‘The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty’ (Proverbs 22:3 NIV). ‘The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty’ (Proverbs 21:5 NIV). What you are today was determined by decisions you made in the past. If you want to change your future, learn to make better decisions. Let these ten principles guide you: 1) Never make permanent decisions based on temporary circumstances. If you do, when things change, you may regret it. 2) Don’t let your emotions blind you to reason. Pray, weigh things carefully, and base your decisions on mature judgement. 3) Surround yourself with sharp people, then draw on their gifts without being intimidated by their expertise. 4) Take time to consider all your options. What looks good to you today may not look so good tomorrow. 5) You can’t fight successfully on every front, so choose your battles carefully. Some things are not worth fighting for. 6) Take time to get all the facts; otherwise, you can end up in trouble. 7) Consider the consequences of each action. Ask yourself, ‘Am I ready to handle this right now?’ 😎 Make sure your expectations don’t exceed your potential and your resources. Focus on what God has gifted you to do, for that’s where you will succeed. 9) Time is your most valuable resource; use it wisely. 10) Never give up. Be willing to make mistakes, learn from them, and start over as often as necessary in order to succeed.
