Today, I left a correctional centre with a different perspective on life.

Today, I had the opportunity to join some members of Egushi Branch, NASFAT Ogun Zone 3, on a visit to the correctional centre in Ilaro, Ogun State.
It was my first time visiting a correctional centre, and honestly, the experience gave me a lot to think about.

I went there expecting to see people who had lost their freedom. But, I left thinking about how much freedom those of us outside take for granted.

Before entering, we were asked to leave our phones, bags and every other personal item inside the bus we came with. We were searched thoroughly before we could proceed into the correctional centre.

Then, we met the inmates.

What touched me most was seeing many of them gathered in the mosque. Some were educated. Some recited the Qur’an beautifully. Some praised the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with so much love and joy. They were learning, praying and engaging in vocational activities.

And I kept thinking: 🤔😌🥲

How easily do we forget that life can change?

Some people are actually there because of mistakes they made.

Some are there because of circumstances surrounding their cases.

Some may even be serving time for something they did not do.

Whatever the circumstances, one thing became clear to me:

Being free is a blessing.

The ability to wake up, walk outside, go wherever we want, worship freely, visit people and return home to our families. Hmm... these are blessings we sometimes often don't appreciate until we see someone who doesn't have them.

Today's visit reminded me not to be too quick to judge people by where they are today.

And above all, it reminded me to say:
Alhamdulillah for the freedom I often take for granted 🙏.

May Allah protect us from whatever can take away our freedom, guide us away from wrongdoing, and make us useful wherever He places us. Aameen. 🤲🏽

Sometimes, you don't need to be behind bars to realise that freedom is a blessing.
