Light The World Charity Machines are coming again this December to Manchester. We are excited about working closely with three local charities as well as national and international charities as part of this initiative.
More information to follow soon regarding dates and venue.
In 2024 we had a fantastic response with regards to volunteers and the number of donations made. We will be looking again for your support as volunteers for these machines and also to come and donate, to bring your family, friends and work colleagues and have that special Christmas experience, the spirit of giving! Every donated item will and does make a difference in the life of another.
There will be a dedicated Light The World UK page to cover the 3 venues, Manchester, Birmingham and London.
A link will be shared soon and we would encourage you to follow to get updates and much more.
We look forward to sharing more of this exciting news and invitation to get involved over the next few weeks!

Last week members of Southports Interfaith Group met, at The Hebrew Congregation of Southport’s Synagogue. Among the faith leaders and representatives present was Debbie Fullwood, who is the groups chairperson, from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and group member Muharrem Cardemir, (pictured back row, second from the right) He represents The Dialogue Society, a charity that aims to connect diverse communities. Muharrem commented after the meeting, ‘I am always pleased to take part in Southport Interfaith Group meetings and events. It’s become a valuable network of local people from different faiths, who are now also strengthened by friendship. We are all committed to mutual understanding and cooperation for the peace, social cohesion and wellbeing of Southport. We work to promote this ethos within our communities.’

The new chairperson of the North Meols Family History Society, Andrew Cullum (pictured on the left), is giving an open invitation to anyone who would like to attend the Southport Family History Fair, which will be held this Saturday, between 11am-4 pm, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Preston New Road. Andrew suggests, ‘If you are not sure how to start your family history, or if you have hit a brick wall while researching your family tree and need advice on how to continue, or if you would like to learn something more specific like how to find out about the area where your relatives lived, then the Family History Fair is for you.’

The Fair has been organised by the North Meols Family History Society and the Southport FamilySearch Centre.

Andrew continued, ‘There will be displays and information stands from various organisations including Lancashire Family History & Heraldry Society, Ormskirk and District Family History Society, and Liverpool and Southwest Lancashire Family History Society. There will also be family history specialists from the FamilySearch team based at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who are able to give help from a more world wide perspective.

Andrew Chalmers (pictured on the right alongside his wife Sandie Chalmers), who is the Southport FamilySearch Centre Coordinator added, ‘It's a pleasure to be once more hosting the Southport Family History Fair at the Church. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about exploring your family history. If you are new to researching your family history, in addition to the helpers from the numerous societies, there will also be two live presentations. They will both be delivered by the Family History Specialists from the Chorley FamilySearch Centre. One will be at 12 noon and is entitled “Introduction to FamilySearch.” The second will be at 1:30pm, and is called "Building Your Family Tree."

As people ready themselves to honour our armed forces this weekend, one young missionary, volunteering in the town, for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has an extra special reason to reflect on those who serve their country.

Sister Hannah Murphy shared what inspired her about one of her family’s military heroes. ‘My Great-Grandma Josephine was an amazing woman and led an incredible life.
She died when I was young, and so my memories of her revolve around mobile scooter rides and big smiles. However, as I have grown up and listened to more and more stories about her, I have realised she wasn't just my gentle and kind great-grandma but an absolute badass.’

Hannah, who came to Southport from her home in Huddersfield, explained, ‘See, my Great Gran kept a secret for the majority of her life. During the war, she worked at the Ventnor Radar system, that was on St Boniface Down on the Isle of Wight. The system was a serious asset in the detection of the Luftwaffe raids and in the protection of England. For this position, she signed the official secrets act and had to hide what she did every day for decades. Then, she kept that secret all the way up to the 2000s.

While she was working there, she met my Great-Grandad, an RAF pilot, and they fell in love, married, and a long way down the line, I come around.’

The missionaries for the Church undertake service opportunities, work in the community, and teach people who want to learn about Jesus Christ.

Sister Murphy noted that, ‘Although I'm not on the Isle of Wight, Southport, with its long beaches and gardens, has brought my thoughts pretty close to my Great Gran, especially during Armed Forces Week.’
