WINDOW REFLECTION by Ross Martin
‘Do this in remembrance of me’. Jesus’ prayer in the midst of our Eucharist lights a sense of belonging in all our hearts, regardless of race, religion, custom. The words are like a spiritual eternal call to our common sense of brotherhood and sisterhood.
‘We break this bread to share ’… The people beside us with whom we share at the altar rail become our brothers and sisters in Christ, and His body unites us. God wants us to be together, to live in harmony together, to care for one another.

Recently, whilst away in Malta I attended mass at St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral tucked quietly away in the vast city of so many streets, avenues and alleyways. I knew no one, the congregation was made-up of visitors like me - British ex-pats - but who were still settled in Malta, and a proportion of others from around the world from Europe and India. The service was straightforward, modest, formal, basic, but the sharing of the bread and Eucharist brought us all instantly together - that moment at God’s table when we feel connected as one. After the service, tables were laid and coffee and cakes were served.

Being in community with others, drinking and eating, sharing, listening, and in a community of strangers, there was an extra feeling of warmth in all of us. We felt we were together at a family meeting. ‘We are one family because we all share in one bread. Thank you, Lord for showing us through your sacrifice how we must care for you -care for one another and love one another. No matter wherever you are or maybe in the world the Eucharist is your Well of sustenance for us all.
