Centra Ballinderry are hosting a Charity Fun Day on Saturday, 5th September, with proceeds going to Chest, Heart & Stroke.

A great day of fun for all the family, while supporting a fantastic local charity. ❤️

IMPORTANT: Please note we made a mistake with the date - this event is on FRIDAY 2nd October - NOT Saturday 3rd as originally stated.

Come and join us on Friday 2nd October for an evening of Ulster-Scots music and dance at Ballinderry War Memorial Hall. A light supper will be provided. A suggested donation of £5 per person would be welcome to help with the work of the Ballinderry Residents Association to go towards our village defibrillator fund and other activities.

This afternoon at my advice surgery in Ballinderry I was delighted to catch up with Eddie Carson who has dedicated himself to the local community for many years as Chairman of the Ballinderry War Memorial Hall. The restoration project is moving forward to a very exciting period as we are getting closer to the major renovations of this Hall which today on the 1st July was most poignant as we sat under the names of those who made the supreme sacrifice.

110th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme
1st July 1916 – 1st July 2026

“I am not an Ulsterman, but yesterday, the First of July, as I followed their amazing attack, I felt that I would rather be an Ulsterman than anything else in the world. My pen cannot describe adequately the hundreds of heroic acts I witnessed. The Ulster Volunteer Force, from which the Division was made, has won a name that equals any in history. Their devotion deserves the gratitude of the British Empire.”

Wilfrid Spender was a Plymouth-born newspaper manager, Quartermaster of the Ulster Volunteers, General Staff Officer of the 36th (Ulster) Division, recipient of the Military Cross for his actions at Thiepval, and later became the first Cabinet Secretary of the Government of Northern Ireland in 1921.

On this 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, we remember the courage, sacrifice and service of all those who fought, particularly the men of the 36th (Ulster) Division. Their legacy endures.
