Grace Communion Lewes

Grace Communion Lewes Small and friendly Christian group meeting at the House of Friendship, 208 High Street, in Lewes for informal church services. All welcome

We are a small group of “young at heart” people learning more about Jesus every day. We are grateful for his grace; which means he has given us a clean sheet and we can start to grow into the person that He intended us to be. Because He loves us, we are guided by His Spirit to love others. Because He forgives us; we learn to forgive others. The choice is ours, but it is foundational to building be

tter relationships with our family, neighbours and even our enemies. It is an exciting journey of reconciliation and a foretaste of the good news of peace and eternal life that God has offered each and everyone of us. Grace Communion in Lewes is part of Grace Communion International, a worldwide denomination and has over 50,000 members in some 900 churches spread over 100 countries. Our global congregations (from all walks of life) have met under a tree, beside a rubbish dump or in a purpose built building – wherever God gathers us together. In fact, we are all kinds of churches for all kinds of people in all kinds of places. Summary of Our Christian Faith

There is one God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God the Father made all things through the Son, sent the Son for our salvation, and gives us the Holy Spirit. The Son of God, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, was born of the virgin Mary, fully God and fully human, and is the perfect revelation of the Father and the perfect representative of humanity. He suffered and died on the cross for all human sin, was raised bodily on the third day, and ascended to heaven. Standing in for all humanity before the Father, Jesus Christ provides the perfect human response to God. Since he died for all, all died in him, and all will be made alive in him. The Holy Spirit brings sinners to repentance and faith, assures believers of their forgiveness and acceptance as God’s dearly loved children, and works in them to conform them to the image of Jesus Christ. The Bible is the inspired and infallible Word of God that testifies to Jesus Christ. The Bible is fully authoritative for all matters of faith and salvation. Salvation comes only by God’s grace and not by works, and it is experienced through faith in Jesus Christ. Christians respond to the joy of salvation when they gather in regular fellowship and live godly lives in Jesus Christ. We look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the age to come.

The world is a difficult place to live in. It just seems to be full of stress, anxiety, worry, fear, apprehension, conflict and the search for meaning. In such a world, Paul’s opening greeting to the church in Thessalonica was not just a formulaic way of starting a letter, it carries the heart and hope of the Christian message. Grace is God’s unmerited favour towards humanity....

There’s a tension every traveller knows when your plane is delayed, your train is late, or your ride hasn’t yet arrived. You stand at the curb or in the terminal, watching the minutes tick by, scanning for signs that it’s finally time to move forward. Do you grow restless? Lose confidence? Or do you stay ready, trusting the one who said they’re coming?...

There are moments in life that pull us out of the ordinary and fill us with awe. One such moment happened when my son Abel invited me to Joshua Tree National Park in California to witness the Milky Way. Joshua Tree is one of the best places to see the Milky Way during a new moon. Recently, I heard about someone who bought a house near the area where I live in Bogotá. These houses are large and very old. The owner began to remodel it and when lifting the wooden floor — what a surprise! There were three trunks full of pure gold jewellery. We might say these are very lucky people, right? The previous owners had never realised what was beneath their floor....

It seems social media has caused us to be more isolated and less connected, even though the social part of social media might suggest otherwise. Nothing can replace the connections we make when we interact IRL (in real life). Talking together and looking in someone's eyes just can't be replicated on a device. We are already suffering the consequences of too much screen time, especially with children and teens....

Behind this confession in the Creed is Paul’s statement in our header scripture, and it brings a change in the Creed’s terminology from belief to acknowledgement. We don’t believe in baptism itself: we believe in one God, the Father Almighty, in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord, and the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life. Our confession about baptism and forgiveness is part of the confession of the triune God....

When I think about the Apostle Paul, I see a very powerful and strong Christian man; one to look up to. It is not because he was so perfect, he was thought to have weak eyes because of the large letters he wrote with (Galatians 6:11). Not everything he tried to do worked out right. 2 Corinthians 11:23-27 mentions more trouble than we have experienced in a lifetime....

As Paul writes the words of our header scripture, he is imprisoned in Rome, not only facing death but abandoned by some of his friends (vv.10, 16), and yet his confidence and trust in God doesn’t waver. At the beginning of verse 18, he says, ‘The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom.’ Then, in a joyful response, he bursts out in praise, ‘To him be glory for ever and ever....

Have you ever been involved in a mistaken identity? Several years back when I was working for Youth for Christ, I was in Denver, Colorado for ministry training. Some younger staff friends and I went into a specialty shop to pick up a few personal items. The shop owner happened to be minding the cash register. This shop owner was a tall lean, athletic, gentleman who was a bit older than me....

The opening of Paul's letter to the church at Colossae begins with a brief introduction which includes a warm greeting from Paul and Timothy (Colossians 1:1-2), some words of thanksgiving for the ongoing faith of this troubled community (vv.3-8), and a prayer of encouragement (vv.9-14). The apostle Paul had never visited the church at Colossae in Asia Minor, yet he took the time to write to these young believers from the limiting confines of a Roman prison....

Who does God work with to help fulfil his purposes? Humanly we might think it would be those who are strong, or wealthy, or well educated, or have the right social status or connections. After all that often seems to be how people ‘get ahead’ in the world around us. But often God surprises us. Consider just a few of those God chose to help further his plans:...

Have you ever worn a crown? I came close once, when I was in the running to be the ‘Honoured Queen’ in Job's Daughters (a service organisation for young women with ties to the Masons). I declined the nomination and gave up my chance to wear the crown. A crown doesn't have to be a literal one – It can be a promotion, an accolade, an accomplishment or even a feeling of pride....
