Dear Birstall Methodist Church Family,
As a church family, there are so many aspects of our life together that we need to nurture with tender care. We seek to worship together, serve together, grow together and share in the life of our community. But today, I want to reflect particularly on one of those aspects as the Body of Christ and that is watching over one another in love.
Pastoral care is such an important part of our life together as a church. It is about noticing when someone is struggling, remembering those who are unable to worship with us, offering a listening ear, sharing a cup of tea, praying together, or simply letting someone know that they have not been forgotten.
We are blessed by a dedicated team of pastoral care visitors who faithfully offer care, friendship and support to members of our church family. I am so grateful for the love and commitment they show. However, the team needs more people to join them, so that together we can make sure that everyone who needs pastoral care is able to receive it.
So, I would like to make an appeal to our church family: would you consider becoming a pastoral care visitor?
You do not need to have all the answers, and you do not need to be an experienced pastoral worker. What matters most is a willingness to listen, to care, to walk alongside another person and to offer something of God's love through your presence.
If you would like to find out more, I would be very happy to meet with you and talk about what being a pastoral care visitor involves. There will also be an opportunity for training and support, so that you can feel confident and gain a deeper understanding of this important ministry. You would not be doing this alone, you would be part of a caring and supportive team.
I believe this is a wonderful opportunity for us to live out what it means to be the Body of Christ. We belong to one another. When one person is struggling, we do not simply look away. We notice. We care. We pray. We walk alongside them. And when someone rejoices, we rejoice together.
Pastoral care is one of the most practical and beautiful ways in which we can say to one another: “You matter. You belong. You are loved. You are not alone.”
Perhaps you have the gift of listening. Perhaps you have time to offer. Perhaps you have experienced the difference that a visit, a conversation or simply knowing that someone cares can make.
