𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞

Did you know?

There are springs in the ocean.

Not rivers flowing into the sea.

Actual springs on the seabed, where fresh water emerges from beneath the ocean floor.

For most of human history, nobody knew they existed.

They were only discovered with modern exploration and diving technology.

Yet thousands of years ago God asked Job:

“Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?” - Job 38:16

Think about that.

Job lived in a world without submarines.
Without scuba gear.
Without sonar.
Without underwater cameras.

The depths of the ocean were a complete mystery.

Yet Scripture speaks of springs of the sea.

The point of the passage isn’t science.

It’s humility.

God is reminding Job that there are wonders in creation beyond anything he can see or understand.

And perhaps that’s still true today.

The more we discover about our world, the more we’re reminded how much remains hidden.

🌊 The ocean still holds mysteries.

🌌 Space still holds mysteries.

✨ And God is greater than them all.

🔐 The Three-Key Chest

Tucked away inside St Michael’s is an old oak chest that once held some of the church’s most precious possessions - parish books, Bibles, and even church silver.

But here’s the fascinating part…

The chest has three separate locks.

One key was held by the Rector, and the other two by the Churchwardens. To open the chest, all three keys had to be present.

Why? Because no one person was entrusted with access on their own. It was an early form of accountability, ensuring that important records and valuables were protected and that decisions were shared.

Long before passwords, security systems, and bank vaults, St Michael’s had its own way of safeguarding what mattered most.

Next time you’re in church, see if you can spot this remarkable survivor from a time when trust was literally locked away behind three keys. 🔑🔑🔑

SUNDAY REFLECTIONS

Yesterday we were reminded that Christianity is not simply something we believe; it’s something we live.

Jesus saw people in need and called His followers to stand alongside them.

Nearly two thousand years later, that calling remains the same.

We are not called to stand apart from our communities, but to serve within them - showing something of Christ’s compassion, hope and love wherever we are.

𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐓𝐎 𝐒𝐓. 𝐌𝐈𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐄𝐋’𝐒 - Holy Communion

Sunday, 14 June 2026 @ 11 am

One of the most important services in our church calendar is Holy Communion (sometimes called the Eucharist or the Lord’s Supper).

During the service we remember Jesus’ words at the Last Supper, when He took bread and wine and told His disciples to do this in remembrance of Him. It is a moment of worship, thanksgiving, reflection, and receiving God’s grace.

The bread and wine remind us of Christ’s sacrifice, His love for us, and the new life we have through Him.

If you’re visiting St Michael’s, please don’t worry about “getting it right.” We know church traditions can sometimes feel unfamiliar.

If you are baptised and normally receive Communion in your own church, you are welcome to receive Communion with us.

If you are not confirmed, not baptised, unsure, or simply prefer not to receive Communion, you are warmly invited to come forward for a blessing instead. Just bring your service booklet with you or keep your hands by your side, and the minister will know you’d like a blessing.

Everyone is welcome at the table, whether to receive Communion or a blessing.

After all, Jesus spent much of His ministry inviting people to come closer, not sending them away.

There’s always More to St Michael’s than first meets the eye.

🔬 Where Science Meets Scripture

Did you know?

Most ancient cultures believed the earth rested on something.

A giant turtle.
An elephant.
A pillar.
The shoulders of a god.

It sounds strange to us now, but if you stood on solid ground and looked around, it was a reasonable assumption.

Then along comes a statement written thousands of years ago:

“He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; He suspends the earth over nothing.” — Job 26:7

Read that again.

He suspends the earth over nothing.

No pillars.
No turtle.
No giant holding it up.

Nothing.

At the time, nobody had seen the earth from space.
Nobody understood gravity.
Nobody had satellites or telescopes.

Yet Job describes something astonishingly close to what we now know.

🌍 A planet hanging in the vastness of space.

Was Job giving a science lesson?

No.

He was describing the greatness of God.

But every now and then, science shines a light on a verse and makes us stop and say:

“How did he know that?”

🔔 The Bells of St Michael’s 🔔

When we hear 1599, it’s just a number.

But then you realise:

📜 Shakespeare was writing his plays.

👑 Queen Elizabeth I was still on the throne.

🌎 The Pilgrim Fathers had not yet sailed to America.

📖 The King James Bible was still years away.

And high above Ravenstone, the bells of St Michael’s were already ringing.

For more than 400 years, they have sounded across the village through wars and peace, baptisms and funerals, celebrations and sorrow. Generations have come and gone, yet these ancient voices remain.

One bell still bears the inscription:

🔔 “Feare of God” (1599) 28” (E flat)

Another proclaims:

🔔 “God Save Our Queene” (1599) 29.5” (D flat)

🔔 “Huis sci Patri” “Know His Father” 33.625” (B flat)

There are 3 missing (another mystery 🤔)

The bells have watched the world change beyond recognition.

Next time you hear them ring, remember - you are listening to a sound that has echoed across Ravenstone since the days of Shakespeare.
