LTU Catholic Society

LTU Catholic Society Leeds Trinity University Catholic Society was founded to provide a forum for Catholic Students in which their common faith might be enriched and explored.

Aim
To provide a forum in which the issues, concerns and aspirations of the Catholic students at Leeds Trinity University might be discussed; that remedies might be found to problems and action taken to implement the vision generated from a common faith. Implementation
The implementation of this aim, it is hoped, will come about through efforts in the following areas.
• Leeds Trinity University C

atholic Society will seek to support Catholic students in the formation of both their understanding and practise of the Catholic Faith. This should be achieved in close co-operation with Leeds Trinity University Catholic Chaplaincy , as well as other Catholic associations in Leeds, that a common effort might be made in the formation of young Catholics.
• Leeds Trinity University Catholic Society will seek to collect and channel the views of Catholic Students at Leeds Trinity University that a strong focused Catholic voice may be heard within the institution. It is hoped this effort will help improve and formalise the process of engagement between Catholic students and the University authorities, Student union, and Catholic Chaplaincy.
• Leeds Trinity University Catholic Society will seek to promote fellowship amongst Catholic Students and support the flourishing of friendships. It will do this by hosting social events and activities open to the wider university community as well as organising gatherings for the community itself . Aside from these three main efforts, there remains one particular motivation that the Leeds Trinity University Catholic Society must hold in its consciousness. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). It is in the spirit of this great commission that all actions of the Leeds Trinity University Catholic Society should be carried out; that the joy of the Gospel may permeate the Society and it’s interactions with the wider world.

“Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?”
Lord, your word this evening strikes us and regards us, all of us. In this world, that you love more than we do, we have gone ahead at breakneck speed, feeling powerful and able to do anything. Greedy for profit, we let ourselves get caught up in things, and lured away by haste. We did not stop at your reproach to us, we were not shaken awake by wars or injustice across the world, nor did we listen to the cry of the poor or of our ailing planet. We carried on regardless, thinking we would stay healthy in a world that was sick. Now that we are in a stormy sea, we implore you: “Wake up, Lord!”- Pope Francis March 2020

Really moving watching Pope Francis in a empty St Peter's Square in the pouring rain!

Let us use this time of distance and isolation to allow ourselves to really grow deeper in our faith and build up strong meaningful relationships with eachother ❤🙏

Announcing CathSocs Annual Big Talk!

The Mind has Mountains’: Spiritual Insights into Mental Health.- By Dr. David Torevell (Honorary Research Fellow, Leeds Trinity University).

One-in-four people will experience mental health issues in their lifetime which would benefit from structured treatment or support. One-in-five children will have a mental health issue needing professional help at some time in their childhood. This inter-active talk will focus on spiritual insights into this phenomenon. Drawing from the Christian and Buddhist traditions, it will highlight how these two religions have offered a framework for understanding and responding to this common experience.

Dr. David Torevell worked for eighteen years in Catholic secondary schools before entering Higher Education to teach Religion, Philosophy, Education and English Literature. He spent many years at Liverpool Hope University, latterly as an Associate Professor, before moving onto Leeds Trinity University, where he became an Honorary Research Fellow. He is the author of Losing the Sacred: Ritual Modernity and Liturgical Reform and Liturgy and the Beauty of the Unknown. Another Place. He has edited an eleven volume series on ethics and published many articles in international journals. His research interests are: Catholic Education, Contemplative & Philosophical Theology and Religion, Literature and the Arts.

This talk will be held in the Auditorium of Leeds Trinity University starting at 6pm!

All are welcome!
