Friends of Roundhay St John's church, Leeds

Friends of Roundhay St John's church, Leeds Founded in 2014, The Friends of Roundhay St John's church currently maintain the North churchyard. Founded in 2014, The Friends of Roundhay St. What do we do?

John's Church is committed to working towards the restoration and conservation of the Grade 2 listed church and the two adjacent graveyards which had fallen into disrepair. The church property is situated on a slope in a semi-rural area on the outskirts of the City of Leeds. The church itself sits between the two graveyards; the original south graveyard was consecrated in 1826 and the north yard w

as added in 1932. Although most of our members are local/regional, others have joined who live in different parts of the UK and abroad but retain ties with the area. Some members have met people from around the world on the church property who have specifically journeyed to St. John's to see the graves of ancestors and were saddened by the neglect of the property. The south yard was partially cleared by some members during 2015, with the remainder cleared in January 2016 by a company employed by the current owners. Likewise, the north yard has benefitted from three years of the Friends' loving care so that other visitors should not leave disappointed. The goal of The Friends of Roundhay St. John's Church is to protect and preserve for the public benefit the integrity of the property of the former Church of Roundhay St. John, with initial emphasis being given to the North Churchyard but with an eye for the future of the whole. Roundhay St. John's is located in a Conservation Area and makes a very valuable contribution to the character of the neighbourhood. It is currently at great risk due to a mixture of mismanagement and neglect and the very diverse group of Friends is unified by a shared concern for the future of the church and its grounds. How do we do it? By regular meetings and discussions, working parties and circulating information within the group and the wider civic community, we aim to raise awareness of the church and grounds, its history and its remarkable significance for the local area and for the City of Leeds. For whom do we do it? The Friends aim to be instrumental in saving Roundhay St. John's for the families of those who rest there, the local area and for the people of the City of Leeds. A plea for help.

There are a number of headstones such as these two at St. John’s on which the writing is difficult to read as the black paint on the words has worn away over the years.

Is there anyone out there with a steady hand who might be able to help us restore the inscriptions?
We would happily provide paint and brushes, but sadly don’t have the skills to do this important job ourselves.
Any offers would be gratefully received.
Please contact us through the message board or email Lynne on [email protected]

The garden working party had a very productive Saturday in the lovely spring sunshine, as can be seen from these images.

Ian hard at work clearing the path up to the West door;
Sue clearing the area next to the wall alongside the park;
Wendy busy strimming round the headstones where the mowers couldn’t reach;
Samantha weeding round the deutzia;
Martin and David fixing up the new wheelbarrow;
Susie tidying the steps and flower bed leading up to the main path;
Enjoying a well-earned coffee.
