From Monday 1st to Sunday 7th June, we're joining the national celebration of Volunteers' Week, giving thanks for the many people who generously serve God, the church and our local community through the gifts, skills and time they offer.
Spotlight on a volunteer: Louisa
For the past three years, Louisa has been part of the worship team at St Paul's. Alongside other musicians from across the church, she helps lead the music in our Sunday services and at other special events throughout the year.
For Louisa, volunteering is about far more than simply helping out. She sees it as an opportunity to use the gifts God has given her in service of others and in worship of Him.
She says: "It is a privilege to be able to be part of this team that helps people to connect with God through music."
Reflecting on her own musical journey, Louisa believes that God has been at work throughout her life, preparing her for this ministry. She shares: "I was blessed to grow up in a musical family who encouraged me to learn a variety of instruments, and I believe that one of the main reasons for that is that God was preparing me to lead His people in worship of Him in this way."
The worship team seeks to create space for people to encounter God through music, whatever they may be bringing with them each week. As Louisa explains, "In the Bible we are told to 'Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord,' and hopefully we are providing a space for people to do this in our services, however they are feeling, using a variety of songs and styles, from joyful to lamenting."
Asked whether she would recommend volunteering to others, Louisa says: "It's a great way to meet people who have similar interests to you in the church family, as well as to develop the strengths that you have been gifted with and serve God and the church well."
We are deeply grateful for Louisa and for all those who help lead our worship. Their faithful service reminds us that volunteering is not simply about filling roles, but about offering ourselves, our gifts and our time to God for the blessing of others.
If Louisa's story has sparked your interest, we'd love to help you explore the different ways people can be a part of and contribute to the life of St Paul's and our wider community. Opportunities vary in commitment and responsibility, and we'd be happy to have a conversation about what might be a good fit for you.
