Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor: Queen Elizabeth the Second
21st April 1926 to 8th September 2022

The former Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, offers these words:

“The Queen dedicated her life to our country. We will always be grateful for her truly remarkable service. She leaves behind a powerful legacy, not least in championing friendship between people of all faiths and races, and promoting development.

“For those who share a Christian faith, The Queen’s own deep faith has been an inspiration - demonstrated throughout her life in her words and actions.

“During this sad time for millions, we should never forget that at the centre of national and international mourning, there is a family grieving for their much-loved mother, grandmother and great grandmother.”

I invite you to pray with us in memory and thanksgiving of The Queen’s life and service.

May she rest in peace and rise in glory.

At the Parochial Church Meeting of 12th July 2022 it became clear that the Church Commissioners (in London) will not be discussing the future/planned closure of the church this month. In fact, 13th September is the earliest they will talk about us; if not, then in October or beyond.

This means that the Church of the Venerable Bede, Wyther, is OPEN for worship and use of its halls and rooms for the rest of 2022 and probably until May 2023, at least.

Re. hall bookings: the hourly hall booking charge will rise to £30/hour from 1st October 2022 (the first increase in over ten years) and the kitchen will cost a flat £30 for hire. Deposits of £100 for all events will be required; the whole sum paid at least 7 days in advance. Until 30th Sept. it's £25/hour.

The church, like everyone else, has got to contend with hikes in energy costs. Contrary to what some people think or say we do not get any money from the Government (apart from Gift Aid for taxpayers - available to all charities).

Sunday 24th April 2022 sees our APCM take place after the 10.00am Sunday service, so about 11.30am - also in church. APCM stands for the Annual Parochial Church Meeting. Anyone who lives in the parish, church member or not, can vote for churchwardens at the first meeting, the so-called Annual Vestry Meeting, but only church members can vote at the main meeting, APCM, that follows.

It's good we're having the meeting as time was when we thought in 2021 the church might close by Easter 2022. WE'RE STILL HERE.

The Bishop of Leeds, Rt. Rev. Nick Baines, attended a Church Council meeting on Tuesday 15th March 2022 and we're still waiting to hear from him (in writing) about the future of the church.

For the record, the present church building officially opened on 28th May 1938, a Saturday that year, and a Saturday this year. On Sunday 29th May 1938 there were four services in church and the following Sunday 5th June 1938 (Whit Sunday or Pentecost that year) there were FIVE services. Also, for the record, the first church building in the new parish of Wyther was actually a wooden shed roughly where the big sycamore tree is now. That building was opened on Saturday 21st March 1925. So the present parish is nearly a hundred years old.

For the record, those four acts of vandalism against the church over Christmas and New Year have cost us £440 in repairs (to steps, kerbstones and replacement windows). None of this is claimable on the insurance because of a) a £250 excess, and b) the insurers will only pay out on a single act of criminality (the window repairs were less than £200, the steps about £180, and the kerbs £60). So, it's local people who have coughed up for this. We can ill afford it.

I heard that someone was arrested for it (but don't know if that's true). A bit of restorative justice would be for them to pay for the damage. Something like this happened at a previous parish where a lad whose name was on the church in griffiti form; we got him to clean it off. We didn't have any trouble from him after that.

We all need to pray like mad about Ukraine. It could all be relatively peaceful (if 50 or so dead so far is acceptable) but it could become very bloody. Meanwhile, the West sits on its proverbial hands. Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers" (St. Matthew's Gospel, chapter 5, verse 9), and he went on to add, "for they will be called the children of God." By God, we need them now.

On Saturday 22nd January 2022 at 11.00am there will be a Memorial Service to mark the life of Rev. Ade Lawal, Priest in Charge of the Venerable Bede, 2009-2012. She died on 14th October 2021 aged just 54 years (from a blood clot on her lung). The service will be based on her funeral held in Bedford last November. Please come and give a Yorkshire Farewell to this fine priest.

The church has suffered some serious criminal damage over Christmas and New Year. On 21st December, and then again on 25th Dec,, paving slabs up to six feet long, that form the steps to the church on the Stanningley Road side, were torn up by local youths and then broken up. In all about a thousand pounds' worth of damage. Also, 5 windows have been smashed with stones also on the north side of the church (possibly the same gang which was seen running from the church into the Wyther estate). The Crime Numbers: 13210660457 and 13210665870 were issued by West Yorkshire Police for the damages to the steps. If anyone can provide information we'd like to hear from them. Call Andrew on 07715 563729.
