📖 The Throne of Grace – Guided Retreat at The Wellspring

Join Joe and Cathy at The Wellspring for a gentle and reflective guided retreat exploring one of the extraordinary invitations of the New Covenant: to come boldly into the presence of God.

At the Cross, Jesus did far more than secure the forgiveness of our sins. He took our sin upon Himself and gave us His righteousness, changing both our identity and our standing before God. We are no longer defined by condemnation or separated from Him by our failure; in Christ, we have been made new.

When Jesus died, the veil of the Temple was torn from top to bottom. The barrier was removed. Through Christ, a new and living way into God's presence has been opened, and we are invited to draw near — not because we have earned the right to come, but because Jesus has made the way. And where does that way lead? To the throne of grace.

This retreat is an invitation to explore what it means to live as a child of God who truly belongs in His presence: forgiven, accepted, brought near and welcomed. Through biblical teaching, guided reflection, prayer and extended periods of personal retreat, we will consider what Jesus has secured for us and what it might mean to respond to His invitation: Come boldly.

Set in the peaceful surroundings of The Wellspring, there will be space throughout the day to slow down, listen and spend time with God personally. Retreat areas will be available both indoors and outdoors, weather permitting. Numbers are limited to 15 to maintain a peaceful atmosphere and allow plenty of personal space for reflection.

The Exchange: Ashes for Beauty 🌿

Isaiah speaks of a holy exchange: beauty for ashes.

That does not mean pretending that what hurt us was somehow beautiful.

Ashes are evidence that something has burned.

Loss can be real. Regret can ache. Exhaustion can leave us with very little to offer.

But grace says the ashes do not have to be the end of the story.

God can bring comfort where there has been sorrow, perspective where there has been confusion, strength where we have become depleted, and hope where something seemed finished.

So if you are carrying ash today, bring it to Him honestly.

You do not need to disguise it.

Ask simply for one gift:
comfort, perspective, strength or hope.

Grace doesn’t waste pain. It transforms it.

Grace When You Feel Dull 🌿

Some days feel spiritually flat.

You pray, but don’t feel much. You read, but the words seem to stay on the page. You know God is near, yet your heart feels distracted, tired or dry.

Grace does not withdraw on those days.

“Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed… They are new every morning.”
— Lamentations 3:22–23

God’s mercy is not measured by how strongly you feel it. His nearness is not cancelled by a dull morning.

So today, don’t force a feeling. Receive mercy as fact.

Take one slow breath and pray:

“Lord, I receive Your mercy.”

Grace meets you in the ordinary.

Transformation Through Delight 🌸

Worship is not merely a duty to perform. It is a turning of the heart toward the God who is already full of beauty, goodness and joy.

“In Your presence is fullness of joy.”

And joy has a way of loosening what fear tightened.

So perhaps transformation does not always come through pressure, striving or self-improvement. Sometimes it comes through attraction — through being drawn again into the presence of God.

Today, let delight do its quiet work.

Speak one truth about God.
Sing, if you can.
Take a walk and notice beauty.

Grace draws.
Love changes.

Grace That Restores Joy 🌼

Joy isn’t pretending that everything is fine.

Sometimes life is difficult. Sometimes joy becomes thin, and trying to manufacture it only leaves us more tired.

But Scripture tells us:

“The joy of the LORD is your strength.”

Not because life is always easy, but because grace is still real.

Perhaps joy sometimes begins again in very small places.

A kindness received.
Fresh air.
A conversation.
A shaft of sunlight.
A flower we almost walked past.

Today, don’t force yourself to feel joyful.

Bring your heart honestly to God — and then notice one gift.

Receive it.

Let gratitude make a little room for joy to return.

Grace restores joy quietly — then steadily.

Join Cathy and Joe at The Wellspring for a quiet day rooted in the powerful encounter between Jesus and the woman at the well—a meeting that began with simple thirst and became a life-changing revelation.

Through Scripture, reflection, and space to respond, we will explore the deeper longings within us, the way Jesus meets us personally and without barrier, and the promise of living water that satisfies and overflows.

As we gather at The Wellspring, we are invited not only to receive, but to become people in whom His life springs up—refreshing, restoring, and drawing others to Him.

This day offers space to draw near, to listen, and to respond—perhaps in ways that go beyond words—as we learn to pour out our lives before Him.

Identity: Sealed and Secure

Sometimes our sense of security rises and falls with our circumstances.

One day we feel close to God. Another day we feel uncertain. Our emotions shift, our confidence wavers, and what once seemed settled can suddenly feel fragile.

But Scripture points us somewhere more dependable.

Having believed in Christ, we were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.

Paul calls the Spirit the guarantee of our inheritance.

So your security does not rest on how secure you happen to feel today.

It rests on God’s mark, God’s promise and God’s faithfulness.

Let the Spirit’s presence reassure you:

You belong.

Sealed. Secure. Kept.

“In Him you also trusted… having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance…”
— Ephesians 1:13–14

Freedom From the Need to Impress 🌿

The need to impress is a heavy yoke.

It keeps us performing, adjusting, proving, managing how we come across, and quietly living for approval. But grace frees us from that exhausting centre of gravity.

“If I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.”

If we live for people’s approval, we will always be pulled off-centre. But there is freedom in returning to the audience of One — the Father who delights in us.

His delight steadies us.
His love loosens the grip of anxiety.
His grace frees us to be sincere.

Today, let His delight unhook you from the pressure to impress.

You are free to be sincere.

A Heart Made New

God is at work in you—often beneath the surface.

He who began a good work will bring it to completion. Not by your force, but by His faithfulness.

If you can’t see progress, don’t assume absence. Seeds grow in hidden places.

Christ Alone in The Waiting

Waiting can feel like failure—until grace reframes it.

"Wait for the Lord;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the Lord! "
— Psalm 27:14

“Wait for the Lord; be strong.” Strength here isn’t strain; it’s trust.

If you’re in a season of not-yet, let Christ be your steadiness. He is not withholding love while you wait.

Today, practise patience as worship.

“God is not in a hurry, and you are not behind.” — Dallas Willard

Christ alone is enough—even here.
