The Friends of Lastingham Church is a registered charity for all those for whom Lastingham is important. For a good many of its long years since it was founded as a monastery ad 654, Lastingham has been a centre of pilgrimage, and today attracts many visitors. The reasons why people come to Lastingham vary enormously but few leave unmoved. Many people find they visit repeatedly over the years and

that, during times of stress and trouble, they find some strength or comfort here. Others find a fascination with the sheer age of the place, its beauty and its historical importance.

I have received the following sad news from Penelope, Church Warden of St Mary's Church, notifying us of the death of our Father Bill, who was the Parish Priest here in Lastingham from 2016 to 2020.

"It is with great sadness that I convey the sad news of the death of The Right Reverend Harold William Godfrey (Father Bill) who died on 13th January 2026. He served as Parish Priest of the benefice of Lastingham from June 2016 – April 2020. Previously he had ministered in South America for 30 years, first as Bishop of Uruguay, then Bishop of Peru. His deep spirituality, kindness and love of nature, touched the hearts of many. Please pray for him and his wife Judith, his Son Reverend Mathew Godfrey, his daughters Reverend Rachel Hill and Martha Critchlow, and his beloved grandchildren.
His funeral will take place on Tuesday 3rd February at Ripon Cathedral at 12.30 pm (to be confirmed)"
