Traitor or Faithful? Which are you?
‘Traitors’ is a British BBC reality television series broadcast, which has attracted millions of viewers. It is a ‘fun game’ of trust and treachery, portraying back-stabbing, scheming and deceit as life skills. Players designated as ‘faithful’ have to identify the players who are ‘traitors’.
The BBC news is full of reports about Lord Peter Mandelson who is accused of real treachery. He is being investigated for selfish financial crimes involving betraying his position of trust; of sharing market-sensitive information with a criminal. Many people are now ashamed of their friendship with and trust in this disgraced man.
There have been many traitors in history. The most famous in the Bible was the disciple Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus into the hands of the religious rulers. He seemed to be a true follower of Jesus, and fooled the other disciples, though not Jesus. In fact, even before this he had been a selfish and cunning thief.
He [Judas] said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it (John 12:6).
And he actually initiated the agreement to betray Jesus to the chief priests for 30 pieces of silver (Matthew 26:1416). He was a fake disciple: a traitor.
In total contrast, Jesus was completely honest and free from any trace of deceit. He asks his followers to trust him, not be ashamed of him, be his friend and try to be like him. He said:
For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels (Luke 9:26).
Just as in the BBC game, there are only two groups of people; sheep or goats, faithful or ‘traitors’. Jesus also said:
Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters (Luke 11:23);
and
You are my friends if you do what I command you (John 15:14).
There is no middle ground. We are either faithful to Jesus or we are not. Surely we want to be faithful, not traitors. We do not want to let Jesus down. And we need to be genuine: we cannot fool God or Jesus. Let us therefore find out what they ask of us and try to the best of our ability to do it. If we do this then God will not be ‘ashamed’ of us, but pleased to give us a place in His wonderful kingdom with Jesus as king.

How Can we Trust Leaders who do U turns?
Political U turns are repeatedly given bad press. In the UK, Sir Keir Starmer has made 13 such changes of mind in his 18 months as prime minister. These took between a few weeks and over a year. American President Trump is also well-known for U turns, to the extent that he is now associated with the acronym TACO (Trump Always Chickens Out). While admitting a mistake can be honourable, many people question the integrity of leaders who keep changing their decisions and resolves about important policy.
Jesus Christ never made any U turns. This is because he never made any mistakes. He did not need to change his mind. The same is not true of the rest of us. One of the most famous and important U turns in history is that of the apostle Paul, who was originally called Saul. This important Jewish religious leader was initially intent on eradicating Christianity.
But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem (Acts 9:1-2).
This was after he had consented to the murder of the first Christian martyr, Stephen (Acts 7). But on the way to Damascus Saul saw the risen Jesus, believed, was baptized, and became one of the most significant preachers of Christianity. A complete U turn (Acts 9:20-22).
The biblical word ‘repentance’ effectively means a ‘U turn’. Jesus and the apostles told people that if they wanted to please God they must ‘repent’.
Jesus preached:
…the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel (Mark 1:15).
After a local disaster, he said strong words:
…I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish (Luke 13:3).
The apostles repeated the message:
Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out (Acts 3:19).
Repentance means admitting being wrong and then changing one’s attitude, priorities and lifestyle. We are all commanded to repent: to do a massive U turn. Left to our own thoughts and standards we are without hope. We need to accept God’s standards. And it does not matter if we are young or old; if we have spent a long or short time going in the wrong direction; or even how bad that way was. The important thing is, like Saul, to change and do a U turn.
But having done this, a subsequent U turn back would be disastrous. Jesus also said:
…No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God (Luke 9:62).
Having committed to following Jesus, repented and been baptized (Acts 2:38) it would be fatal to do a U turn on that decision and resolve (Hebrews 10:37-39).
Finally, we need to be immensely grateful that God does not do a U turn on His offer of eternal life.
For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable (Romans 11:29).
Whether or not they do U turns, no human leader can be trusted totally. Let us do a U turn and follow Jesus because he is utterly faithful and trustworthy.

Free speech & the Bible
In many countries people value the right of ‘free speech’. But free speech can be dangerous. In the first century the apostles of Jesus were falsely accused of blasphemy.
In the Law of Moses the punishment for blasphemy was indeed death (Leviticus 24:10-16), but the apostles were telling the truth.
Blasphemy laws were revoked in the UK in 2008. They are considered an infringement of human rights and free speech. But God still hates blasphemy. God does not like some forms of ‘free speech’.
In fact, in most countries, including the UK, ‘free speech’ is qualified. This means that there are restrictions. For example, citizens are not entitled to threaten national security or public safety, and should not encourage disorder or crime. Inciting hatred is not allowed. In some countries, people have to be careful about how they present Bible teaching, because people are still arrested and convicted for what they say.
Another consequence is that ‘fake news’ and misleading information abound. If we cannot evaluate the validity of what we read or hear, then this too can be dangerous. For example, a UK doctor is currently under scrutiny for making public his
personal views. Doctors are, under the regulatory terms of their profession, required to ensure that what they say is accurate and so not misleading. They must not present opinion as fact, and must make sure that they take reasonable steps to ensure the accuracy of what they say. This is because their role is to promote good and not harm. Disinformation could lead people to do unhealthy or dangerous things or not to do healthy things. Doctors need to be careful because most people are unable to evaluate the medical literature and research results. They are unlikely to have access to
things like primary research data.
Now that brings us to the Bible. Much is said and written about the Bible. Preachers should take special care to ensure that they speak accurately, that they do not misrepresent the Bible, and that they clearly distinguish between their own opinion and fact. But many do not. Consequently, much of what is in the public domain is disinformation and fake. Unlike medical data, most of us have access to a Bible. It is therefore critically important that we check the Bible to evaluate what people say about it.
Misinformation from a medical doctor can lead to death. Misinformation about the Bible can lead to eternal death.
So let's read it for ourselves, checking what it actually says, and take notice of its message.

Failed Assassination Plots
There have been several plots to assassinate prominent people. In the United Kingdom Guy Fawkes night was instigated to remember the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Guy Fawkes and fellow Catholic conspirators attempted, but failed, to blow up Parliament and assassinate King James 1.
There were several unsuccessful attempts to assassinate Adolf Hi**er, including a famous conspiracy by several people in 1944. In contrast, Abraham Lincoln was actually mortally wounded by a gunshot fired while he was in a theatre in 1865.
Two thousand years ago the Jewish religious leaders conspired to have a divinely appointed king, Jesus Christ, publicly executed on false charges. They hated Jesus for his claims (which they erroneously considered outrageous), and his growing popularity with the people.
At face value they succeeded. Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus’ disciples betrayed Jesus to them for money, and Jesus was captured, tortured and crucified between two criminals.
But the Jewish leaders did not realize that this death of Jesus was all in the plan of God.
For Jesus was:
“…delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God” (Acts 2:23).
Moreover, Jesus willingly gave his life, as he had said:
“…I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord…” (John 10:17-18)
The apostle Peter quoted Psalm 2 describing the futility of their scheming:
“Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed” (Acts 4:25-26)
And later in the Psalm (verse 4) God is described as laughing in heaven and holding them ‘in derision’ for their folly.
God raised Jesus from the dead. Jesus was not eradicated. Jesus could not be eradicated. And he is now immortal and can never die.
However clever we think we are, and however ingenious our schemes, we can never thwart God. He has a plan for the earth and it will happen.
Whether we are part of that plan depends on our response now.

Is Easter in the Bible?
It is Eastertime. Easter is one of the main religious festivals of mainstream churches. But the word ‘Easter’ does not appear in the Bible.
The 1611 translation of the Bible mentions Easter in Acts 12:4, but most translations adhere to the original Greek word which is Passover (or Pesach). Passover was one of the main Jewish religious festivals which involved a lamb with no defect being killed. This was to remind the Jews about how God had delivered them from Egypt under Moses. But it was also to teach them of the need for a perfect sacrifice in the future. This future, most important, sacrifice was when Jesus Christ was crucified, and this was at the time of the Passover festival. Jesus was the ultimate Passover lamb:
For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed (1 Corinthians 5:7).
Because of this there is no need for any more sacrifice, and Christians are asked not to sacrifice animals.
Jesus did, however, ask them to remember his death in bread and wine.
And he [Jesus] took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ”This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood”
(Luke 22:19-20).
The early church did this weekly, on the first day of the week. And the death and resurrection of Jesus form the cornerstone of Christian faith.
And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised (1 Corinthians 15:14-15).
So what of Easter itself? There is no record of the early Christian church celebrating the resurrection of Jesus, except in the bread and wine. The festival of Easter started well over 100 years later. Its origins are in spring festivals celebrated centuries before by Babylonians, Phoenicians and Chaldeans who worshipped Astarte, the supposed goddess of spring and rebirth. Sweet buns, eggs and rabbits all feature in these ancient pagan rituals at springtime. And the ideas were merged into church worship.
So Easter is not a biblical concept. But the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are absolutely key to true Christian belief. They are far, far too important to leave to once a year.
As we approach Easter we do well to ask ourselves how much the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus mean to each of us.

Happy International Women's Day!
To celebrate we're thinking about a wonderful woman in the Bible, Ruth. She faced hardship in her life, including the death of her husband, but she persevered and was a loyal companion and friend to her mother in law.

RUTH 1 v 16
I’ve followed orders all my life,
Do this, do that and more,
I’ve kept the house, I’ve cooked the food,
Yes that and every chore,

But now you’re gone, I’m here alone,
Your mother with me too,
Go back she says, I’m going home,
Is that what I should do?

Oh think, just think, it might be new,
But I too have a mind,
I cannot leave Naomi,
She’s good, she’s fair, she’s kind.

She’s all alone, apart from me,
To her I will be true,
My life, my choice, my destiny,
I will start something new.

Her God, my God, her fate, my fate,
Together we will seek,
A promised land with blessings new,
God cares for those who seek.

Gross Miscarriage of Justice.
The UK Post Office scandal is prominent in the news. It has been brought to the public attention by a TV dramatization, and related documentary. However, it had already been in the news, and books have documented the sordid details.
No computer system is guaranteed fault-free, and Horizon certainly wasn’t. But hundreds of people were blamed for its errors and held responsible for large sums of money. There were blatant lies, cover-ups, reluctance to provide the facts, and officials protecting their own reputations: all resulting in false convictions, hundreds of lives ruined, bad physical and mental health, and even su***de. It is difficult to see how any good came out of it. People did not deserve such injustice.
Two thousand years ago an innocent, sinless man was condemned to torture and murder. There were lies, corruption, false evidence, officials concerned only about their own positions and reputations, and nobody prepared to defend a totally innocent man.
The enormous difference is that unspeakably good things did come as a result. While the individuals concerned acted in an evil way, God was giving His son Jesus as a sacrifice for our sins.
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
His life, death and subsequent resurrection are the means, and the only means, by which we can be saved from eternal death.
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12).
A ‘great multitude that no one could number’ will be given eternal life in God’s kingdom.
After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” (Revelation 7:9-10).
We are all sinners. We all disobey God. But this man was prepared to suffer and die to wipe this out.
He did not deserve that suffering. We do not deserve the outcome.
Journalists have commented that, despite their reports, it took a drama to bring the Post Office scandal to the forefront of the public attention. The Bible has been around for many hundreds of years. What would it take to bring the saving work of Jesus to the forefront of our attention?

Tennis Star Reborn
In September 2021 our blog commented on the fact that Emma Reducanu was described in the press as having ‘gained immortality’.
As she now faces the Australian Open Championship she is reported as saying that, having been off the tennis court for some time, she feels ‘reborn in a way’. This was reported on 31 December just prior to the ‘birth’ of a new year.
Ironically, on that day I was witnessing a religious ‘rebirth’ ceremony. An adult man had taken note of the words of Jesus:
'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God' (John 3:3).
This man wanted to be a true follower of Jesus. Having studied the Bible, he asked for baptism – complete immersion in water.
This is exactly what the Christian church did in the first century:

'But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women' (Acts 8:12).
Emma also said that after winning the American Open title she had to ‘mature’. Apparently she did not feel ready for the challenges ahead after such a momentous win. Maturity is also required in following Jesus. The prerequisite for baptism is an understanding of the gospel message. Jesus himself said:
'Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned'(Mark 16:15-16).

Faith is absolutely essential: a sincere belief in the gospel message.

'And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him' (Hebrews 11:6).

The baptism of the believing adult is the mark of starting a new life following Jesus. So my friend had to be aware of what was involved, and be prepared to face the new challenges ahead of him. All those who do remain faithful will, like Jesus, be given eternal life.

'He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, he will give eternal life' (Romans 2:6-7).
Emma said that she felt ‘fresh…ready…happy…and excited’. So too my friend who emerged from the baptismal bath beaming with new eternal hope...and that hope will be realised when those who've believed in Jesus and been baptised will be granted immortality in God’s coming kingdom.
