Prayers 19 August 2026

In the quietness of our homes, let us place ourselves in the presence of God.

† In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

We thank and praise you, Lord God of mercy and grace, for you entered into covenant trust with your chosen people and bestowed on them boundless gifts and an irrevocable calling. In Jesus you take your children’s food and give it to all creation, even we who lurk in the shadows, hoping for the crumbs of your eternal glory. You have lifted us from the floor to your table, and from a place beyond redemption to the joy of your heart.

Living God, however poor our prayer is, we search for you with calm confidence. Your love carves out a way forward through our hesitations and even through our doubts.
Jesus our peace, by the Holy Spirit you always come to us. In the deepest part of our soul, there is the wonder of a presence. Our prayer may be quite poor, but you pray within us.

Eternal God, in whose providence we are closely bound together in the bundle of life, in our society, in the church, and in the world, help us to remember how much our lives depend upon the courage and industry, the honesty and integrity, of our fellow human beings, and on the natural resources of our planet earth.
May we be mindful of all their needs, grateful for their services, and faithful ourselves in our responsibilities towards them; for Jesus Christ’s sake. And may your holy and life-giving Spirit move every human heart, so that hatred and suspicion, exclusion and exploitation, cease within our society.

Forgiving God, you sent Joseph to Egypt, through the conspiracy of his brothers, to redeem your people from the curse of famine. You sent your Son, Jesus, to the cross, through the corruption of our human will, to liberate us from sin and death. Raise up among us children of hope, of courage, of truth, and of vision, who embody your will to turn our evil into your good. Transform the lives of all who suffer in the global hunger and malnutrition crisis today; visit any who are excluded by envy or prejudice or fear; and lift the hearts of those who are weighed down under burdens too great to bear.

O God who is love, and who sees all the suffering, injustice, and misery which reign in this world: Have pity on the work of your hands. Look mercifully on those affected by the oppression of women and girls in Afghanistan; on patients with Ebola in DR Congo and their families; strengthen the resolve of those who treat them, alleviate their plight, and fight the epidemic. Fill our hearts with deep compassion for the injured and bereaved in the earthquakes in Colombia and Indonesia and in the ferry disaster on Zimababwe’s Lake Kariba; and for those who endure loss of loved ones, terror, and bombardment in the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Hasten the coming of your kingdom of justice, truth, and peace.

Lord God, renew in us peace of heart and a serene joy this day. Risen Christ, you are with us, even with those who are unaware of your presence. You place in our hearts a longing for your kingdom. You call us to share the fruits of the earth and of our work. Lord God, by Christ the fullness of your life is offered to us. May we this day place into your hands our entire life.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen.

Melanie’s sermon from this morning

13/08/2026

In the heat of this day, Lord, we come before you, withered like the land around us. Enable us, whatever situation we find ourselves in, to come before you respectfully, humbly, with a listening heart and mind. Amen.
Ein Tad… (Our Father…)
On this day we pray for the worldwide church, with all its issues, that we may be united in bringing the Gospel message of the Risen Lord Jesus, our wonderful Saviour, into the lives of others. Let us not be affected by the sinful actions of the wider world, but concentrate on following the two great commandments that you have left us with – to love the Lord our God with all our heart, and to love our neighbours, to treat others with a respect and godly love that only wants the very best for them, for them to acknowledge and come before you, in a sense of true love. We especially pray for those Christian brothers and sisters who live in fear of daily torture and death for their beliefs, giving thanks to you for those who help spread the Gospel, as well as for churches which are growing. May all in authority in our churches, seek only to do your will, to encourage and promote growth in the power of your most Holy Spirit.
We pray for all those affected by the devastating fires that are happening around our world at this time, often caused by negligence or wanton acts, as well as the recent earthquake in Colombia. Thank you, Lord for the gifts of the firefighters trying to contain and put these fires out, even though they have often spread over many miles. You have provided us with a beautiful world, which we are destroying, causing our planet to go up in smoke, our rivers to run dry, and by causing the deaths of our animals as well as people. Help us as a world, to see the error of our ways, to start conserving the natural resources of our world, to stop vandalizing our planet, and helping the younger generation to see that fire and destruction are not the way forward.
Lord, being human, we know that our time on this world is finite, that we will all become unwell and leave this mortal coil at some point. Therefore, we pray for all who are unwell at this time, whether in hospital, care homes, those ill at home, those waiting to see doctors in our surgeries and anyone who requires treatment through their local pharmacy. You, Lord are the creator and healer of all, and without you we would cease to exist. Help all who suffer, whether in mind, body or spirit, bringing your love to them, and enable us to see that however finite our time is on this earth, that the faithful will receive that place in your eternal Kingdom promised to us by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

May our prayers be accepted in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Heavenly Father enable us to quieten our minds, to breathe, to focus on you and to leave the world behind as we turn to you in prayer.
The spirit of the Lord fills the whole world
The spirit of the Lord moves over the deep
The spirit of the Lord warms our hearts
The spirit of the Lord fills all things
Silence
Come Holy Spirit, come
Come and fill us.
Come wind of heaven, come
Come and fill us.
Come flame of love, come
Come and fill us.
Come giver of all gifts, come
Come and fill us.
Gracious Father help us to be open to the gift of your Holy Spirit. That we would be willing for it to control our lives so that as your children we can be beacons of light and hope perpetually shining for you in a troubled world. We ask for peace among nations, that you would rid the world of violence and let peoples grow in justice and harmony. That all who are involved in peace talks would be wanting dialogue and stability to be an outcome. We ask Lord for your spirit to be ever present and influencing all humanitarian actions.
Spirit of God, you give guidance to all rulers.
Breathe on us breath of God
Spirit of God you give comfort to the troubled.
Breathe on us breath of God.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all evermore. Amen
