Another uplifting service this morning when we received Kerryanne into the Episcopal Church, and also celebrated Communion Recognition Day for four members of our Sunday School.
The new communicants have been working with their mentors over the last couple of months to learn more about what Communion means. Under Rev Audrey’s supervision, they each created a banner to depict their understanding of the significance of receiving bread and wine. They had some great ideas, incorporating God’s love, the blessing of a loving family, Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross and the glories of creation.
As we love a good celebration at St. Cyprian’s, this was, of course, followed by a bit of a party. A time to share food, fellowship and cake!

Good news for our fellow Episcopalians in Bishopbriggs!

The Rt Rev Dr Nicholas Bundock, Bishop of the United Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway, is pleased to announce the appointment of the Rev Kirsty Massey as Rector of St James the Less, Bishopbriggs. Details of her institution will be announced in due time.

Kirsty says, “I am very much looking forward to joining the congregation at St James the Less, as we work out together how God is calling us to share his love with the community of Bishopbriggs. Paul and I will be very sad to leave all the wonderful people in Anston, Firbeck, Letwell and Woodsetts, whilst for me it will mean coming home, for him living north of the border will be a whole new experience. It was good to meet several members of the Vestry in July, and we look forward to getting to know the whole church family soon.”

Bishop Nick says, “I am delighted that the Rev Kirsty Massey has accepted the call to become the next Rector of St James the Less, Bishopbriggs. Kirsty comes to us from the Diocese of Sheffield, where she is currently Priest in Charge and Oversight Minister. Before ordination, she spent many years in primary education, and brings considerable experience of teaching, pastoral care and encouraging others to discover and use their gifts. Kirsty has worshipped and ministered across a broad range of church traditions and brings a collaborative approach to leadership, together with a real commitment to community engagement, schools and ecumenical partnership. I am looking forward to welcoming Kirsty and her husband Paul to the Diocese, and to seeing this new chapter begin at St James the Less.”

Please pray for Kirsty and Paul, and the communities of Anston, Firbeck, Letwell, Woodsetts, and Bishopbriggs.

Today was the first day back at school for our children and young people, so during yesterday’s morning service, Rev Audrey did a very special blessing of all our backpacks, briefcases, lunch bags, handbags etc.,
There were also tags for everyone to attach to their bags, and spares for family and friends. Hopefully, pupils, parents, carers, teachers and everyone else involved, had a very blessed first day back!

The choir vestry was a hive of activity on Saturday morning, as the Informed Communion class and their mentors got together to create banners to decorate the church. Each pair talked about what communion meant to them and how the banner could represent those feelings. With lots of fabrics to choose from, some great ideas, and Rev Audrey’s ironing skills, we had a very creative morning!

This morning we were delighted to welcome lots of visitors who timed it perfectly to help us celebrate Rev Audrey’s first year with us. The time has absolutely flown by, and we are so blessed that she came to join us. Very serendipitously there was leftover cake from the hugely successful Mothers’ Union 150th Anniversary service at St.Mary’s Cathedral yesterday, (well done for all your hard work, Maxine!) so that went down very well at coffee time.
Next Sunday, the 16th August, is the day before school starts and so we are having a special service including the Blessing of the Backpacks and Diaries! Bring along your school or work bag, lunch bag, diary, phone, calendar etc., and receive that extra boost to help the term go well.

This morning our Informed Communion class learned about the symbols of Eucharist and baked the bread for our communion service tomorrow. Good messy fun and growing with God!

Our new sensory area is looking great! It offers a soothing and engaging space, especially suited to our youngest members of the congregation.

The books are children’s books about God and/or bible stories, and items will be changed in rotation to keep the space fresh and inviting.

A few weeks ago in Sunday School, the children were learning about Paul’s letters to the early Christians sending them love and encouragement. We decided that we would like to write our own letter.
As our Sunday School had joined the young people in the West Highland Region, Scottish Episcopal Church the previous year on a wonderful retreat on Iona, they seemed like the perfect recipients of our letter.
We were absolutely delighted to receive a card in return with messages from all six churches of the West Highland Region.
Such small acts which mean so much!
