I’m quite moved by this picture.
This is most of our pastors and campus pastors at Home Church.
I remember the days when I would welcome everyone to church, lead worship, preach the message, then get back up and lead the closing worship.
It was basically the Dave show.
Not by design or choice. Just necessity. There weren’t many of us, so you did what needed to be done.
Back then, fewer than 20 people were attending on a Sunday.
Today, just seven years later, over 1,100 people call Home Church their church home.
I still struggle to comprehend that.
God has been immensely good to us.
People often ask me why I think the church has grown. The first and most important answer is God. For whatever reason, He has chosen to bless us, and I’ll never take that for granted.
There are definitely things we’ve learned about removing blockages to growth. If you want those, buy my book in November!
But this picture is a huge part of the story.
PEOPLE.
You cannot build a growing church around one person.
You have to spot potential. Give people opportunities. Trust them. Train them. Let them make mistakes. Give them real responsibility. And eventually, release them to do things you could never do yourself.
Twelve campuses don’t happen because of my ability, or anyone else’s.
They happen because people were raised, equipped and willing to GO.
I’m incredibly grateful for every person in this picture and the brilliant teams serving alongside them.
They preach. Pastor people. Lead teams. Solve problems. Pray. Sacrifice. Serve. And keep showing up.
IF YOU WANT TO BUILD YOUR CHURCH, BUILD PEOPLE.
Because ultimately, the capacity of your church will be shaped by the capacity of the leaders you are raising.
You can only do so much yourself.
Raise people and there’s no telling what God can do through them.
