Today we heard ministry about learning to recognise distractions that prevent us focusing on what is essential in ourselves and our lives. Our own uniqueness can be our gift to the world. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18k8mMVADj/

"Give over thine own willing, give over thy own running, give over thine own desiring to know or be anything and sink down to the seed which God sows in the heart, and let that grow in thee and be in thee and breathe in thee and act in thee; and thou shalt find by sweet experience that the Lord knows that and loves and owns that, and will lead it to the inheritance of Life, which is its portion."

Our youngest Friend, age 4 months, captivated us all on Sunday as she gazed at the faces in a circle around her, at the Old Kirk's colourful windows, and at the picture book beside her.
'Rejoice in the presence of children and young people in your meeting and recognise the gifts they bring.'

After our hour of worship today, there was lots of chat over tea and coffee as we were pleased to catch up a Friend who moved from Fife to Ardnamurchan two years ago. Quaker communities, large or small, are enriched when we get to know each other better, and can therefore better support each other.
'One of the unexpected things I have learnt in my life as a Quaker is that religion is basically about relationships between people. This was an unexpected discovery, because I had been brought up to believe that religion was essentially about our relationship with God.
If we are sensitive, we find that everything that happens to us, good or bad, can help us to build a vision of the meaning of life. We can be helped to be sensitive by reading the Bible and being open to experience of nature, music, books, painting, sport or whatever our particular interest may be. It is in and through all things that we hear God speaking to us. But I do not think I am alone in my certainty that it’s in my relationships with people that the deepest religious truths are most vividly disclosed.

George Gorman, 1982 (Quaker Faith and Practice 10.20)

With all that's going on in the world right now, this morning we reflected on the commitment to Peace that Quakers made in a declaration to Charles II in 1660:
'All bloody principles and practices we do utterly deny, with all outward wars, and strife, and fightings with outward weapons, for any end, or under any pretence whatsoever, and this is our testimony to the whole world...and we do certainly know, and so testify to the world, that the spirit of Christ which leads us into all Truth will never move us to fight and war against any man with outward weapons, neither for the kingdom of Christ, nor for the kingdoms of this world.' (Quaker Faith and Practice 24.04)

It's Chinese New Year! At All Age Worship today we heard about the festival and the children gave out traditional gifts of oranges. We also heard a reading from Quaker Faith and Practice:
26.19 'God is revealed to individuals through models suited to their temperaments and abilities; to communities through models suited to their culture. Nor will the interpretation of these models always be the same. Each one is only a guide to the truth that is greater than them all yet accessible in the nearest and simplest way… As our experience widens we are brought closer to aspects of God which we did not understand before...Our own vision is widened by the vision of others.'
Janet Scott, 1980

Our monthly All Age Worship today truly felt like a multigenerational gathering, and we explored the theme of 'Truth' together. We heard a story about Nelson Mandela and his determination to stand up for what he knew to be true and fair, and heard Advices and Queries 37 & 38: 'Are you honest and truthful in all you say and do?...If pressure is brought upon you to lower your standard of integrity, are you prepared to resist it?'
