Today Bishop Toal of Motherwell diocese came to our Carmel with four recently ordained priests, and a deacon, Kieran, who will be ordained to the priesthood on 19th June. They concelebrated Mass in our chapel and then came and met us in the community room. It was a great joy for us to meet young priests who are so cheerfully dedicated to their ministry. We pray for them, and ask God to continue to bless Scotland with such good priests.

Here is a photo of Mother with her younger brother Chris, who is 90. He played the organ for the Mass of thanksgiving, including Panis Angelicus and Jesu, joy of man’s desiring. Thanks, Chris, for such beautiful music, and Mother would like to thank all the friends and well-wishers who have sent such kind messages. She will remember you all in her prayers.

Today we had the great joy of celebrating the 100th birthday of our dear Mother Mary of the Resurrection. His Grace Archbishop Leo Cushley celebrated Mass in our chapel, and stayed and talked with us afterwards, which we enjoyed very much. In the afternoon, we gave Mother some gifts, chief of which was an apostolic blessing from His Holiness Pope Leo. Tomorrow we will put more photos and information on our website, as there hasn't been time today. It has been quite busy, but Mother seems to have thrived on it! We thank God for her spirit of prayer, her fidelity to her vocation, and her unfailing cheerfulness.

Our sister Josephine, who wrote the words of this beautiful hymn to Saint Carlo Acutis, was present at Carfin for the Mass in honour of the newly canonised, first millenial saint. May Saint Carlo Acutis continue to draw us all to God's love.

Every year, we celebrate our community feast, in which we thank God for the great blessing of the mutual love which binds us together in Him. As a kind of symbol of our unity, we bring to the feast all the gifts we have made through the year. Each year, we have a particular theme for the feast, and this year, we focussed on the ministry of Pope Leo as the successor of Saint Peter.

Today, we had a visit from some of our Carmelite brothers from the province of Tamil Nadu in the south of India. They were ordained to minister to the spiritual needs of the people, but when they saw how desperately poor they were, they set to work to help them materially as well. Here is a link to their website, which details all the wonderful work they do: www.dcmsss.org
It might be a bit slow to load, but it is well worth waiting, to see how many different kinds of people they are helping towards self respect.

The present political climate of India is making it more and more difficult to carry out this kind of work. For instance, Father Joseph (on the right in the photo) used to have 53 small schools to help the rural children out of illiteracy, so that they will be less vulnerable to exploitation, but now, because of lack of financial support, he can only manage to keep 26 of them open. So he has come to Britain, to try and find financial help to continue to help his poor people.

Father John is actually ministering in Sunderland, and has two parishes. A third indian Carmelite came with them, but he isn’t in the photo, because he has three parishes in Sunderland, and is also chaplain to a hospital, and last night, he was working till 2 o’clock in the morning, before driving the three of them up to Scotland. So he wisely took a rest in the afternoon, so that he wouldn’t be drowsy when he drove them back down this afternoon. We thank him and Father John for their great generosity in their ministry to our country, and we hope and pray that Father Joseph will find the financial help he needs for his ministry in India. If you click the links within the website, it brings you to explanations of how to contribute as a donor from abroad.

Inspite of the great difficulties of their ministry, the most striking impression of our brothers is their happiness and sense of fun. When a photo was going to be taken, all the sisters who were sitting near the fathers quickly moved away, so as not to be in the picture, which made the fathers laugh!

We had a very happy and blessed Christmas, and today, on the last day of the Christmas octave, Fr. Simon our chaplain gave us a concert of carols. He played anything we asked for, and if he didn't know a carol, we only had to sing one verse and he could add a beautiful accompaniment. Rather belatedly, we wish all our relations and friends a very happy Christmas, and a very blessed New Year.

Yesterday we celebrated the 80th birthday of our dear Sister Sally. Several of her family are staying in our guest quarters for the great occasion, and they made a wonderful slide show with photographs from all of Sister Sally's life to mark this event. Sister Sally has certainly had an interesting life, her family moving to Africa shortly after her birth, where she became head girl at her school, excelled at Sports and rode a motorbike before entering Carmel, and after many years, returning to her native Scotland. Now for many years she has been a pillar of our community at Dysart, serving as 1st councillor, and enriching our worship with beautiful music. May she continue to enrich our community with her prayerful presence for many years to come.
