PRAYER GROUP MEETING : Monday 15th February 2026 -
Theme: FORTITUDE This is the word that came to mind for tonight’s theme. Firstly, what is fortitude?
Fortitude is courage in pain or adversity: i.e. "she endured her illness with great fortitude".
How many people do you know who have suffered a horrific diagnosis of cancer, and other illnesses? Think also of those who have survived life-changing injuries in accidents or war and have endured their circumstances with courage and resilience?
I’ve often thought: ‘oh my goodness if that happened to me, I don’t think I could cope!’ And yet, these people do! Why do you think that they do? The answer is simple. I believe that God gives them a certain amount of grace to endure.
In the Bible, fortitude is understood as a multifaceted virtue that embodies spiritual strength, perseverance, courage, and trust in God. It is deeply rooted in faith, hope, and love, encouraging believers to remain steadfast in their convictions despite challenges. Fortitude reflects the abiding trust that God is present and faithful, providing strength to face life's trials.
Old Testament Examples
One of the most prominent examples of fortitude in the Old Testament is the account of Joshua. As he led the Israelites into the Promised Land, God commanded him to be strong and courageous. In Joshua 1:9 , God says, "Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua's unwavering faith and courage in the face of daunting challenges exemplify the fortitude that believers are called to emulate.
Another example is found in the life of Job, who endured immense suffering and loss yet remained faithful to God. Despite his trials, Job declared, "Though He slay me, I will hope in Him" (Job 13:15). Job's perseverance and trust in God's sovereignty highlight the essence of fortitude.
New Testament Teachings
In the New Testament, fortitude is closely linked to the Christian life and the call to endure hardships for the sake of the Gospel. The Apostle Paul frequently speaks of the need for endurance and strength. In 2 Timothy 1:7 , Paul reminds Timothy, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control." This verse underscores the divine empowerment that enables believers to face challenges with courage and fortitude.
Paul himself is a model of fortitude, having endured numerous trials and persecutions for the sake of Christ. In 2 Corinthians 12:10 , he writes, "That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." Paul's reliance on God's strength in his weakness is a testament to the fortitude that comes from faith.
Practical Application
We are all called to cultivate fortitude in our daily lives, drawing strength from our relationship with God and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. In Ephesians 6:10 we are urged to "be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power." This Scripture encourages us to rely on God's strength rather than our own. The armour of God, described in Ephesians 6:11-18, provides the spiritual resources needed to stand firm against the challenges of life.
'Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
New Testament Teachings on Fortitude
Fortitude remains integral in the New Testament, where perseverance under trials is viewed as a means of spiritual maturity.
1. Jesus’ Example - Christ embodies ultimate fortitude. Throughout His ministry, He stood firm against temptation (Luke 4:1-13) and endured the cross “for the joy set before Him” (Hebrews 12:2). His resolute submission to the Father demonstrates that true fortitude is grounded in obedience and love.
2. Apostolic Exhortations - Paul writes, “Be on the alert. Stand firm in the faith. Be men of courage. Be strong” (1 Corinthians 16:13). Such calls emphasize that fortitude is neither foolish bravado nor self-reliance but a steady stance in Christ’s strength (Ephesians 6:10).
3. Faith Under Persecution - The early believers who endured persecution (Acts 4:1-31) serve as models of fortitude. Their steadfast courage attested to the Holy Spirit’s empowerment, fulfilling Christ’s promise that He would be with them to the end.
How do you develop Fortitude?
Prayer, Scripture reading, and fellowship with other believers are essential practices for developing fortitude. Through these means, Christians can grow in their understanding of God's character and His faithfulness, which in turn strengthens their resolve to persevere in the face of trials.
LET US PRAY: Prayer for Fortitude in Difficult Times
Gracious and steadfast God,
When the winds of life howl and the path ahead feels steep,
anchor my heart in Your unshakable peace.
Grant me the courage to stand firm when fear whispers,
the patience to endure when the journey feels long,
and the wisdom to see Your hand at work even in the shadows.
Strengthen my spirit so I do not falter,
and let hope be the flame that refuses to go out.
Teach me to walk with quiet confidence,
trusting that every trial is shaping me for greater purpose.
May my faith be deeper than my doubt,
my love stronger than my weariness,
and my resolve unbroken until the dawn breaks. Amen.
