PRAYER GROUP MEETING : 11.05.26 Theme: EXPECTANCY

First of all, let’s look at what expectancy actually means:
- the state of thinking or hoping that something, especially something good, will happen.

Think of an expectant mother and how she feels during the 9 months she is waiting for her child to be born. There is anticipation, excitement and perhaps a certain trepidation. But ultimately, there is hope of something good about to happen in her life and the lives of the rest of the family.

Expectancy of the Holy Spirit
In two weeks’ time (May 24th) we will be celebrating Pentecost. It is a time from now until then, of great expectancy for the coming of the Holy Spirit.

The anticipation of the Holy Spirit is a significant theme throughout the Scriptures, reflecting the promise and expectation of God's Spirit being poured out upon His people. This anticipation is rooted in the Old Testament and finds its fulfilment in the New Testament, particularly in the events surrounding Pentecost.

Old Testament Foundations
The anticipation of the Holy Spirit begins in the Old Testament, where the Spirit of God is seen as active in creation and empowering individuals for specific tasks. However, the prophets foretold a future outpouring of the Spirit that would be more widespread and transformative. Joel 2:28-29 prophesies, "And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on My servants, both men and women, I will pour out My Spirit in those days."

Isaiah also speaks of the Spirit's coming in a way that brings renewal and righteousness. Isaiah 44:3 states, "For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring, and My blessing on your descendants." These prophecies created an expectation among the faithful that God would act decisively through His Spirit.

New Testament Fulfilment
The anticipation of the Holy Spirit reaches its fulfilment in the New Testament. John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ, speaks of the coming Messiah when he says: “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. " (Matthew 3:11). This statement sets the stage for the ministry of Jesus, who frequently spoke of the coming of the Holy Spirit as a Comforter and Advocate for His followers.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit - John 14:15-21 (Gospel Reading at Sunday Mass yesterday)
Jesus said to his disciples: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him, because he remains with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.”

Let’s reflect on some Scripture passages that tell us how powerful and necessary the Holy Spirit is. First of all, he worked through his apostles and disciples. Today he works through all believers for service in the church.

Philip’s Ministry in Samaria (Acts 8:5-8)
5 Philip, one of the seven deacons chosen for service in the early church, went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed Jesus as the Messiah there. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7 For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and many who were paralyzed, or lame were healed. 8 So there was great joy in that city.
Acts 8:14-17
14 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.

The anticipation culminates in the book of Acts, where Jesus instructs His disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the "promise of the Father" (Acts 1:4). This promise is fulfilled on the day of Pentecost, as described in Acts 2:1-4, when the Holy Spirit descends upon the apostles, empowering them to speak in various tongues and boldly proclaim the gospel.

How to Prepare for the Coming of the Holy Spirit
As believers we are encouraged to engage in prayer as a powerful tool for receiving the Holy Spirit. The apostles prayed for the believers in Samaria to receive the Holy Spirit, and they were filled with the Spirit.

This act of prayer is a testament to the power of intercessory prayer and the importance of seeking God’s presence and guidance in all aspects of life.

In summary, the anticipation of the Holy Spirit is a profound aspect of our Christian faith, rooted in the Scriptures and fulfilled in the New Testament. It involves waiting for the Day of Pentecost, which is the appointed time for the Holy Spirit’s outpouring and relying on the Holy Spirit for conviction and deliverance. Prayer plays a crucial role in this process, as it is through prayer that we, as believers can expect the Holy Spirit’s presence and power in our lives.

LET US PRAY:
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and kindle in them the fire of Thy love. Send forth Thy Spirit and they shall be created. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.
Oh God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, didst instruct the hearts of Thy faithful, grant us in the same Spirit to be truly wise, and ever rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen

PRAYER GROUP MEETING : Monday 27th April 2026

Theme: THERE IS POWER IN THE NAME OF JESUS

There is power in the name of Jesus because it originates from His Person, who is the Son of God who lived perfectly, died for sin, and rose again. When we, as believers invoke His Name, we are trusting in His finished work on the cross and sharing in His authority through faith.

The name of Jesus carries immense authority, protection, and healing as seen in various biblical verses that affirm His power.

Salvation in the Name of Christ
The name of Jesus is central to the Christian understanding of salvation.
Acts 4:12 declares, "Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." This verse underscores the exclusivity and necessity of Christ's name for salvation. Believers are called to place their faith in Jesus, acknowledging His name as the means by which they are reconciled to God.

Authority and Power
The name of Christ is imbued with divine authority. In Philippians 2:9-11, it is written, "Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." This passage highlights the universal recognition of Christ's authority and the ultimate submission of all creation to His name.

Healing and Miracles
The New Testament records numerous instances where the name of Jesus is invoked for healing and miracles. In Acts 3:6, Peter says to a lame man, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk!" The man is healed instantly, demonstrating the miraculous power associated with Christ's name. This power is not limited to the apostles but extends to all believers who act in faith.

Prayer and Worship
Believers are encouraged to pray in the name of Jesus, as it aligns their requests with His will and authority. In John 14:13-14, Jesus promises, "And I will do whatever you ask in My name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it." Praying in Jesus' name is an acknowledgment of His mediating role and His power to intercede on behalf of believers.

Spiritual Warfare
The name of Christ is a powerful weapon in spiritual warfare. In Mark 16:17, Jesus states, "And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues." The authority of Jesus' name is effective against spiritual forces of evil, providing believers with confidence and protection.

Baptism and Identity
Baptism in the name of Jesus signifies a believer's identification with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. In Matthew 28:19, Jesus commands, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." This Trinitarian formula emphasizes the unity and authority of the Godhead, with the name of Jesus central to the believer's new identity in Christ.

Conclusion
The name of Christ is not merely a label but a representation of His divine nature, authority, and work. It is through His name that believers experience salvation, exercise authority, receive healing, engage in prayer, and participate in spiritual warfare. The power of the name of Christ is a testament to His Lordship and the transformative impact of His presence in the lives of believers.

Philippians 2 Imitating Christ’s Humility
'Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

LET US PRAY: Praise for the Power in Jesus’ Name
Dear Lord,
We come before You in awe of the power found in Jesus’ name.
We praise You for the healing, deliverance, and transformation that His name brings.
May we always remember to call upon Him in times of need, trusting in His mighty strength.
Let our hearts be filled with gratitude as we proclaim His name, knowing that all things are possible through Him.
Amen.

Prayer Group Meeting : Monday 23rd March 2026

A beautiful time was spent last week as we reflected on Jesus and His Holy Face. The Mysteries of Light through the Holy Rosary followed, after our usual quiet time when Our Lord spoke to us, guiding us further into His Light and showing us how to live our lives according to His Will. We spent a long time in intercessory prayer as there are so many people battling health issues and struggles in life.

Theme: The Holy Face of Jesus

Every Christian carries a deep longing in the heart – a desire to one day see the Lord face to face. From the moment we first believed, there has been a hope rooted in Scripture that the veil will one day be lifted, and we will stand in the presence of Christ himself. That hope sustains us in sorrow, lifts us in times of despair, and reminds us that our present troubles are temporary compared to the eternal joy that awaits us.

The Biblical Hope of Seeing Jesus

The promise of seeing Christ face to face is woven throughout the pages of Scripture. It is more than a passing wish—it is a guaranteed reality for those who belong to Him. John reminds us, “We know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2). That hope of transformation and perfect fellowship fills our hearts with anticipation.

The Bible doesn’t just speak of heaven in vague terms; it paints a vivid picture of what awaits. In Revelation 22:4 we read, “They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.” The very climax of eternity is not streets of gold or gates of pearl, but the face of Jesus Himself. For the redeemed, this is the fulfilment of every longing and the answer to every prayer.

Even centuries before Christ came, Job declared in the midst of suffering, “I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God” (Job 19:25–27). His words echo through time as a testimony of faith in the unseen.

However, I asked myself, ‘do I need to be dead before I see the face of Jesus?’ There is a difference between seeing the Lord face to face when you die and seeing the face of Jesus in our lives today.

Let’s look at ways where we see the face of Jesus today:

1. If we want to see Jesus now, we must see Him in His Word. (Read Scripture- and you will certainly see Him there).

2. We see Jesus in the lives of others through the Holy Spirit. It is God’s Spirit that enables us to see Him in the lives of others.

3. We see Jesus by touching Christ through another. This involves recognizing the image of Christ in others and reflecting His love and service in our interactions. This can be demonstrated through acts of kindness, service and humility. As well as sharing the Good News of Jesus. By doing this, we not only help others but also bring a touch of Christ’s love into their lives.

4. And lastly, a question to ask ourselves. Do I show the face of Jesus to others by my own life and by what they see on my own face?

If you think about it, when Jesus walked on this earth, people saw His face. They knew what He looked like. They encountered Him. And that’s the vital part, when you encounter Christ, you see Him with the eyes of your spirit. He enters into a relationship with you and reveals His person to you.

John 20:29 we read about Thomas and his unbelief at seeing Jesus – “Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” – and that’s us. We are blessed because we believe.

The Role of Faith

Faith plays a vital role in the journey toward seeing Jesus face to face. It allows us to encounter God in our daily lives, trusting in His promises, even when we cannot see Him physically. Our faith gives us the courage to navigate our lives, serving Him wholeheartedly. As we strengthen our belief and reliance on Him, we can look forward to that grand moment with confidence, knowing we have faithfully walked the path He laid before us.

My prayer is that I see the face of the Lord before me and that I don’t turn my back to Him. I want to see the face of Jesus more fully, more completely, more nearly and not turn my back on Him.

These are the lyrics of a beautiful song:
I’ve seen the face of Jesus—
He smiled in love on me;
It filled my heart with rapture,
My soul with ecstasy.
The scars of deepest anguish
Were lost in glory bright;
I’ve seen the face of Jesus—
It was a wondrous sight!
Refrain:
Oh! glorious face of beauty,
Oh, gentle touch of care;
If here it is so blessèd,
What will it be up there?
2 And since I’ve seen His beauty
All else I count but loss;
The world, its fame and pleasure,
Is now to me but dross;
His light dispelled my darkness,
His smile was, oh, so sweet!
I’ve seen the face of Jesus—
I can but kiss His feet. [Refrain]
3 I’ve heard the voice of Jesus—
He told me of His love;
And called me His own treasure,
His undefiled, His dove.
It came like softest music
Across an ocean calm,
And seemed to play so sweetly
Some wondrous holy psalm. [Refrain]
4 I felt the hand of Jesus—
My brow it throbbed with care—
He placed it there so softly,
And whispered Do not fear.
Like clouds before the sunshine,
My cares have rolled away;
I’m sitting in His presence—
It is a cloudless day. [Refrain]
5 I know He’s coming shortly
To take us all above;
We’ll sing redemption’s story
The story of His love;
We’ll hear His voice of music,
We’ll feel His hand of care;
He’ll never rest, He says so,
Until He has us there. [Refrain]

LET US PRAY:
Lord, please convict me of a lack of vision regarding Your life and power in me.
Please help me to see you in Your Word and in the lives of others.
Please change and mature me so that others might see You living through me.
Please, Lord Jesus, take me, cleanse me, fill me, use me, I ask you in Your Holy Name and for Your glory alone.
AMEN

PRAYER GROUP MEETING : Monday 15th February 2026 -
Theme: FORTITUDE This is the word that came to mind for tonight’s theme. Firstly, what is fortitude?

Fortitude is courage in pain or adversity: i.e. "she endured her illness with great fortitude".

How many people do you know who have suffered a horrific diagnosis of cancer, and other illnesses? Think also of those who have survived life-changing injuries in accidents or war and have endured their circumstances with courage and resilience?

I’ve often thought: ‘oh my goodness if that happened to me, I don’t think I could cope!’ And yet, these people do! Why do you think that they do? The answer is simple. I believe that God gives them a certain amount of grace to endure.

In the Bible, fortitude is understood as a multifaceted virtue that embodies spiritual strength, perseverance, courage, and trust in God. It is deeply rooted in faith, hope, and love, encouraging believers to remain steadfast in their convictions despite challenges. Fortitude reflects the abiding trust that God is present and faithful, providing strength to face life's trials.

Old Testament Examples
One of the most prominent examples of fortitude in the Old Testament is the account of Joshua. As he led the Israelites into the Promised Land, God commanded him to be strong and courageous. In Joshua 1:9 , God says, "Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua's unwavering faith and courage in the face of daunting challenges exemplify the fortitude that believers are called to emulate.

Another example is found in the life of Job, who endured immense suffering and loss yet remained faithful to God. Despite his trials, Job declared, "Though He slay me, I will hope in Him" (Job 13:15). Job's perseverance and trust in God's sovereignty highlight the essence of fortitude.

New Testament Teachings
In the New Testament, fortitude is closely linked to the Christian life and the call to endure hardships for the sake of the Gospel. The Apostle Paul frequently speaks of the need for endurance and strength. In 2 Timothy 1:7 , Paul reminds Timothy, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control." This verse underscores the divine empowerment that enables believers to face challenges with courage and fortitude.

Paul himself is a model of fortitude, having endured numerous trials and persecutions for the sake of Christ. In 2 Corinthians 12:10 , he writes, "That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." Paul's reliance on God's strength in his weakness is a testament to the fortitude that comes from faith.

Practical Application
We are all called to cultivate fortitude in our daily lives, drawing strength from our relationship with God and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. In Ephesians 6:10 we are urged to "be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power." This Scripture encourages us to rely on God's strength rather than our own. The armour of God, described in Ephesians 6:11-18, provides the spiritual resources needed to stand firm against the challenges of life.

'Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

New Testament Teachings on Fortitude
Fortitude remains integral in the New Testament, where perseverance under trials is viewed as a means of spiritual maturity.

1. Jesus’ Example - Christ embodies ultimate fortitude. Throughout His ministry, He stood firm against temptation (Luke 4:1-13) and endured the cross “for the joy set before Him” (Hebrews 12:2). His resolute submission to the Father demonstrates that true fortitude is grounded in obedience and love.

2. Apostolic Exhortations - Paul writes, “Be on the alert. Stand firm in the faith. Be men of courage. Be strong” (1 Corinthians 16:13). Such calls emphasize that fortitude is neither foolish bravado nor self-reliance but a steady stance in Christ’s strength (Ephesians 6:10).

3. Faith Under Persecution - The early believers who endured persecution (Acts 4:1-31) serve as models of fortitude. Their steadfast courage attested to the Holy Spirit’s empowerment, fulfilling Christ’s promise that He would be with them to the end.

How do you develop Fortitude?
Prayer, Scripture reading, and fellowship with other believers are essential practices for developing fortitude. Through these means, Christians can grow in their understanding of God's character and His faithfulness, which in turn strengthens their resolve to persevere in the face of trials.

LET US PRAY: Prayer for Fortitude in Difficult Times
Gracious and steadfast God,
When the winds of life howl and the path ahead feels steep,
anchor my heart in Your unshakable peace.
Grant me the courage to stand firm when fear whispers,
the patience to endure when the journey feels long,
and the wisdom to see Your hand at work even in the shadows.
Strengthen my spirit so I do not falter,
and let hope be the flame that refuses to go out.
Teach me to walk with quiet confidence,
trusting that every trial is shaping me for greater purpose.
May my faith be deeper than my doubt,
my love stronger than my weariness,
and my resolve unbroken until the dawn breaks. Amen.
