Know as the "Fishermen's Church" due to its location in the heart of Hull's old fishing community, St Johns was completed in 1878. The church, which is in the early English style of the Transition period of architecture, is built of red bricks with stone dressings externally and red brick internally. The interior continues to surprise first time visitors with its grandeur and beauty. The church co

ntinues to serve the remnant of the city's fishing industry, playing a key role in the annual Lost Trawlermen's Day service held on the old St Andrew's Dock each January, as well as hosting the city's maritime groups for the July "Sea Sunday service." The church also plays a key role in the local community. 2011 saw the completion of the Network Youth People's Centre (built on land provided by the church) which can be accessed from inside the church. As well as providing services for young people the NYPC is also used by community groups and St Johns. St Johns, located in the heart of the inner west of the city, continues to provide an ideal base for Christian outreach and witness to the local community. On occasions our Sunday service takes place in the Café attached to St John 10.00am. Tuesday Soup Group 11.00am to 1.00pm. Wednesday Holy Communion 9.30am to 10.00am. Thursday Coffee n Chat in the Café 7.30pm to 9.00pm. Friday Little Johns (Mums & tots group) in the Youth Centre 9.15am to 10.45am. Today at Hessle Road Network staff and volunteers hosted the 80th anniversary of VJ day celebrating the end of the war. At 11am, everyone observed a 2 minute silence in memory of the sacrifices our heroes made, followed by The Last Post. After this we had wartime style buffet lunch. And the party was truly a party with games like tiddly winks, hop scotch, pass the parcel and dominoes! A jolly good singalong was had too with music from artists such as Vera Lynn and George Formby among others.
Huge thanks to the volunteers who organised the event.
