A big thanks to our speaker today Christina Hardyment for our Friends talk about Alyce Chaucer and the de la Poles.

THIS WEDNESDAY, 10th June: HULL HERITAGE WALK – ‘The de la Poles’ Hull’
Join us for an Old Town walk to see places connected to the de la Poles of Hull - merchants, brickmakers and founders of Hull Charterhouse. Mark Roper of TourHull.com will lead the walk.

START – 1.45pm gather for 2pm start at the de la Pole statue on Victoria Pier/Nelson St
FINISH – 3.30pm at the Hull History Centre

Walk cost - £5 per person payable to the guide on the day. Booking not required.

JOIN US THIS WEDNESDAY, 10th June, for ALYCE CHAUCER AND THE DE LA POLE HULL CONNECTIONS by Christina Hardyment. The talk will explore Alyce, granddaughter of Geoffery Chaucer, and William de la Pole, Duke of Suffolk, and their involvement in the development of our city, Hull.
This Friends of St Mary’s event will look at the de la Poles who made their fortune in Hull, became friends of kings, founded Hull Charterhouse and built Suffolk Palace, which once stood opposite St Mary’s.

The de la Poles were a hugely influential Hull family. Having made their fortune as merchants and brickmakers, they progressed to the royal court and became Dukes of Suffolk. In 1431 William de la Pole, Duke of Suffolk, married Alyce Chaucer, granddaughter of Geoffrey Chaucer and one of the largest landowners in England.

‘THE GATE OF THE YEAR’ will be presented by the Two Ann(e)s + Two and hosted by the Friends of St Mary’s.
Programme includes:
