The Kirkintilloch Bothy Fire Memorial Group are seeking to raising £10,000 for a permanent memorial stone for the 10 Irish boys killed in a bothy fire at Waterside in Kirkintilloch on 16th September 1937, as we approach the 90th Anniversary of their deaths.

In the early morning of 16th September 1937, a fire broke out in a ‘bothy’ (stone barn) in Kirkintilloch. Inside were ten boys and young men from Achill in Co.Mayo, Ireland, aged from 13 to 23, who had arrived the previous day to work in gathering in the harvest. Tragically, all ten that were sleeping in the bothy were killed in the fire.

Many of the squad were related to each other, including several brothers and sisters. There names are:

The local authority, East Dumbartonshire Council, have decided that the memorial stone will be mounted on the grass verge beside an existing plaque at Waterside Road in Kirkintilloch. It will be visible beside the roundabout when coming from Kilsyth to Kirkintilloch or passing through to Glasgow.

The connection to St Patrick's Kilsyth is that our assistant priest at the time Rev Fr John McGettigan was asked by Irish authorities to co-operate with the authorities in Scotland to investigate and report on events.
Once his report was written he left St Patrick's Kilsyth and returned to Ireland to present his findings.

❤️🙏 More amazing memories for our pilgrims in Assisi! 🇮🇹

What a beautiful few days they have had as their pilgrimage continues in the footsteps of St Francis and St Clare.

They celebrated Holy Mass in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel in the Basilica of St Clare, before enjoying some time exploring beautiful Assisi, lunch, a little shopping and even meeting up with Agnes, who happened to be there on holiday! ❤️

They also visited the Basilica of St Francis, where they enjoyed a wonderful and very informative tour with Fr Benedict, with some free time afterwards to simply enjoy the beauty and peace of Assisi.

During their time in Rome, they were also joined for dinner by two of our new seminarians, Ben Waller and Kieran Walker, along with Fr Richard Marsden, Vice Rector of the English College. Please keep them in your prayers as they continue their formation and journey towards priesthood. 🙏

And what a beautiful sunset to mark their final evening in Italy before one last meal together. 🌅❤️

It certainly looks like a pilgrimage filled with faith, friendship, laughter and memories that will last a lifetime.

We’re definitely going to miss these lovely picture updates! 🥹❤️ It has been so special being able to follow their pilgrimage from home and share a little of their journey with them.

Safe travels home to all our pilgrims — we can’t wait to hear all about it! 🙏❤️

Carol’s remains will be received into St Patrick’s Catholic Church on Friday, 18th September at 5pm.

The Requiem Mass for the happy repose of her soul will be offered on Saturday, 19th September at 9:30am.

May Carol rest in eternal peace. 🕊️

More amazing memories being made for our pilgrims in Italy! 🇮🇹🙏❤️

They have certainly packed so much into their time in Rome, visiting the four major Basilicas, the Vatican Grottoes, the tomb of Pope Francis, the ancient Christian burial grounds at the Catacombs and so many other beautiful and holy places.

After a final meal together in Rome, the pilgrimage has now continued on to beautiful Assisi, following in the footsteps of St Francis. ❤️

Please continue to keep our pilgrims in your prayers as they continue their travels — and we know they are keeping all of us here at St Patrick’s in theirs. 🙏💚

Catherine’s remains will be received into St Patrick’s Catholic Church on Sunday, 20th September at 1pm.

The Requiem Mass for the happy repose of her soul will be offered on Monday, 21st September at 9:30am.

🇻🇦 More from our St Patrick’s Parish Pilgrimage to Rome 🙏 🇮🇹

What an amazing few days our pilgrims have been having!

A very special highlight was attending the Papal Audience with Pope Leo in St Peter’s Square — and St Patrick’s even got a shout-out, so the Holy Father knew they were there! 🥰🇻🇦

Their pilgrimage has also included Mass in the Vatican Grottoes, time in prayer close to the tomb of St Peter, a visit to the beautiful Divine Mercy Chapel, and Mass at the magnificent Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls.

They have also visited the ancient Christian burial grounds at the Catacombs of San Callisto, as well as enjoying some of the sights of Rome along the way — including the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain & colosseum 🇮🇹

So lovely to receive all these photographs and to follow their journey from home. ❤️

We continue to keep Fr Deeley and all our parish pilgrims in our prayers as they continue this very special journey of faith, prayer and friendship.

🇻🇦 St Patrick’s Parish Pilgrimage to Rome 🙏

A wonderful start to the pilgrimage for our parishioners in Rome. ❤️

After arriving safely and settling in, the group visited the Basilica dei Santi XII Apostoli, where Fr Deeley celebrated Mass — a particularly special way to begin the pilgrimage on Our Lady’s birthday. 🙏🌹

They also enjoyed some time exploring the historic centre of Rome and a lovely meal together.

The following day brought another very special experience, with the group attending the Papal Audience in St Peter’s Square. 🇻🇦

Fr Deeley has also shared that the group will be praying for everyone at the tombs of the Apostles. 🙏

We hope everyone continues to have a wonderful, prayerful and memorable pilgrimage.
