Trócaire’s Lenten Appeal will still be active for a period of time after Easter and all donations to the appeal from the public in NI made before 16th May will be matched pound for pound by the UK government, up to £2m. Supporters who sign up for a monthly gift, or increase their monthly gift before the 16th May deadline, will have three instalments matched.

These matched funds will help thousands of people in South Sudan to grow enough food to feed their families. It will also support strong women like Awut and Ajak – the women featured on this year’s Trócaire Lent Box – in having their voices heard in decisions affecting them. The more funds we can raise by 16th May, the more we are able to help families hurt by conflict to survive and thrive.
Thank you once again for your continued support.
Kind regards,
Siobhan Hanley

SVP Makes Christmas Special for Mourne Families in Need During Pandemic

Despite greatly reduced church door collections because of the pandemic,
St Colman’s conference assisted over 90 Mourne households in need over the Christmas period.

This made possible by the generosity of so many parishioners and other organisations who assisted in the task. For example, the pupils of St Louis Grammar School held a special collection which enabled us to purchase gift vouchers from local shops, thus supporting local business and families in need. Meanwhile the pupils of St Colman’s, St Columban’s and Grange Primary schools together with Gaelsciol na mBeann decorated specially designed Christmas cards to accompany the gift vouchers and other goods which we were able to give to individuals and families.

Newry Chamber of Commerce turned up trumps again this year donating a small mountain of toys for the children identified by ourselves and the local Health Visitor team. Our partners at Cornerstone Foodbank, Kilkeel Development Association, Home-Start, and Mourne Matters joined us to ensure that food parcels, toiletries, masks, sanitisers, clothes, and other goods reached those in need. Our conference also provided fuel stamps, electricity top-ups, recycled furniture and white goods to families beset by redundancy, unexpected bills, and welfare cuts.

Some quotations from those we helped:

1. “SVP has been a Godsend. With no local family support and the children all at home during lockdown I was really struggling to cover the cost of food and heating. You helped me out with oil stamps and a big food parcel as well as a Christmas gift pack containing a perfume set and shoes for my teenage daughters. I used the Asda voucher to buy our Christmas dinner. Thank you so much. We’d be stuck without St Vincent de Paul”.

2. “You got us out of a hole at Christmas. My husband is out of work and we had spent all our money moving to our new home. When we arrived, we discovered there was no oil in the tank. You kindly gave us fuel stamps and shoes and games for our daughter. Can’t thank you enough”.

3. “A big thank you for the oil stamps and toys, toiletries, books and games for the children. Really made Christmas for us at a difficult time when we were all stuck at home with the pandemic”.

Journey with the Gospels through the Easter season to Pentecost!

Over Lent people from across the Diocese joined in an online programme to learn the method of praying with scriptures known as Lectio Divina – Divine Reading. This Easter season, we invite you to join us online for a time of discussion and praying with Scripture through Lectio Divina. The groups are facilitated by Aisling and Louise from the Living Church team on Zoom.

There are two groups available for you to chose from Monday or Thursday evenings at 7pm.

The program will run for 6 weeks starting on Monday 12th April or Thursday 15th April.

It will be great for us to connect with one another and to the Word of God.

To take part email [email protected] and you will receive the log in details for the session. We look forward to welcoming you!

WARNING!

This machine is subject to
breakdowns during periods of
critical need

A special circuit in the machine called a
'critical detector' senses the operator's
emotional state in terms of how desperate he
or she is to use the machine. The 'critical
detector' then creates a malfunction
proportional to the desperation of the
operator. Threatening the machine with
violence only aggravates the situation.
Likewise, attempts to use another machine
may cause it also to malfunction. They belong
to the same union. Keep cool and say nice
things to the machine. Nothing else seems to
work.

Never let anything mechanical
know that you are in a hurry.

Ask your MP to attend a parliamentary event on the dangers of DIY abortion

Governments are currently deciding on whether to make permanent the temporary measure allowing ‘DIY’ home abortions in England, Wales and Scotland.

To ensure that politicians are aware of the negative impact of ‘DIY’ home abortions, the All-Party Parliamentary Pro-Life Group will be hosting a parliamentary event on Tuesday 23 March where experts will cover the latest evidence on how ‘DIY’ home abortions are placing women at risk.

Right To Life UK has set up an easy-to-use tool that will enable members of the public to easily contact their MPs asking them to attend this event. You can do so by following the link below. It only takes 30 seconds!
