Have you ever thought about how real Christian change happens? Change that is healthy, lasting, and shaped by Godâs Word?
I often get discouraged at how slowly I grow. But Iâve been reminded that guilt alone rarely produces lasting transformation. And self help books have some great tips but often leave me empty still. True change comes as God works in us through His truth, by His Spirit (Philippians 2:13).
Hereâs a simple pattern that can help us think about growth:
1) Truth must reach the mind.
We cannot be changed by what we do not know. God renews us through His Word (Romans 12:2), and Jesus prayed, âSanctify them in the truth; your word is truthâ (John 17:17). So we must read it, hear it, and learn it.
2) Truth must grip the heart.
Knowing truth is not enough â we need to love it. The Psalmist says, âOh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the dayâ (Psalm 119:97). This happens as we meditate on Scripture and pray over it. Chew on what you read. Ask questions: What does this mean? What does it reveal about God? What does it expose in me? What promises does it give? Then turn it into prayer.
As we do this, the Lord warms our hearts and strengthens our faith. Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus: âDid not our hearts burn within us⌠while he opened to us the Scriptures?â (Luke 24:32).
3) Truth then shapes the will.
Only then are we in a position to obey â not merely outwardly, but from the heart. Scripture speaks of being âobedient from the heartâ (Romans 6:17). Real obedience is the fruit of truth believed and loved.
May the Lord help us not only to hear His Word, but to be changed by it (James 1:22).
