Thrilled to unveil our first corporate sponsor for Rev Olivia’s 24-hour Spire Challenge…

Inov-8

Of course, a 24-hour hilly challenge requires some decent footwear. We are so grateful to the team at Inov-8 and particularly Bertie INOV8 Forge Store for kitting our Rev out with a couple of pairs of shoes. She can’t wait to try them out on the hills. Watch this space!

T-Minus 93 days until Olivia attempts to get up and down Reston Scar repeatedly for 24 hours… all to raise funds for our beautiful church in Staveley.

Justgiving page incoming… they’re just double checking that we are a charity. (We are.) For now you can donate here: www.parishgiving.org.uk/donors/find-your-parish/st-james-kendal

A message from our Vicar:

So… one evening I was driving back to Staveley and Reston Scar was looking beautiful as the sun set. I had been wondering what personal challenge I could do to raise some funds for St James’ building project.

For those unaware, we sadly had to close access to this beautiful space only 4 months into my time here. This is because of structural issues with both the spire and the lychgate. Since then, our boiler has also given up the ghost. We need to raise some serious dosh!!

Anyway, back to looking at the Scar in all its evening glory… I had a thought. “I wonder how many times I could get up and down Reston in 24 hours…”

Since then it’s turned into an actual thing and so, on 13th September I will be embarking on a (slightly bonkers) 24 hour challenge. After the morning service, I will be setting off… I will be walking from St James’ Church up to the trig point on Reston Scar and back down again, repeatedly, for 24 hours. It’s a 1.4 mile walk each loop, with around 140m elevation gain.

Of course, there’ll be stops along the way for sustenance and normal human needs. But the aim is to keep going as much as I can.

The sponsorship page will be going live soon, and training starts next week. I’ll also be introducing 3 brilliant sponsors who will be helping me along the way.

Watch this space…

Today the Y5/6 children from our village school took part in a Healthy Hearts workshop, where they learned that it is never too early to start looking after their hearts. With support from the Healthy Hearts Team, they explored positive heart‑healthy habits, including making healthy food choices and staying active. They also created some fantastic artwork to reflect what they had learned.

WEDNESDAY 17th JUNE 2026
The Healthy Hearts Roadshow Bus will be at Staveley Fire Station 10.30am - 2.00pm.

You will have the opportunity to have your blood pressure checked. Knowing your numbers empowers people to take positive steps to manage their blood pressure and can help identify potential hypertension — a condition that often has no symptoms but can lead to serious health concerns if left untreated.

The Healthy Hearts Team will also be available to offer practical health and lifestyle advice to support heart health for you and your family. There are many simple steps we can all take to live well, spot potential issues early, reduce health risks, and keep our hearts healthy. No appointment is necessary.

Super excited for this next week! Message us for more info.
