Today we keep the Feast of St Columba:
Saint Columba (c. 521–597), also known as Colum Cille, was one of the most influential saints of the early Celtic Church. Born into a noble family in Ireland, he was educated in monastic schools and became a monk, priest, and founder of several monasteries. Tradition holds that in 563 he left Ireland with twelve companions and sailed to the small island of Iona Abbey off the west coast of Scotland.
On Iona, Columba established a monastery that became a renowned centre of prayer, learning, and missionary activity. From there, he and his monks evangelised the Picts and helped spread Christianity throughout Scotland and beyond. Columba was known for his deep faith, love of Scripture, wisdom, and dedication to monastic life. Numerous miracles and acts of healing are attributed to him.
Saint Columba died on 9 June 597. He is honoured as one of Scotland’s principal patron saints, and his legacy continues through the Christian community he founded on Iona.
Prayer:
Pour into our hearts, O Lord, we pray,
a longing for heavenly glory,
and grant that we may come,
bearing in our hands sheaves of justice,
to where the holy Abbot Saint Columba shines with you.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever. Amen.
