Peninnah was in the house.
Hophni was in the temple.
Both were close to the things of God.
But their hearts told a different story.
Peninnah had what Hannah longed for.
Children. Influence in the family.
But instead of showing compassion, she used her position to provoke.
She mocked Hannah year after year, turning blessing into a weapon.
“Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.”
1 Samuel 1:6
She was present in a family that honored God,
but her heart was not aligned with God’s compassion.
Hophni, on the other hand, was a priest.
Serving in the house of the Lord.
But his actions dishonored God.
He took what was not his, disrespected offerings, and lived without reverence.
"Now the sons of Eli were corrupt; they did not know the Lord" 1 Samuel 2:12
He had position, but no fear of God.
Access, but no obedience.
Both Peninnah and Hophni remind us of something sobering.
You can be around God and still be far from Him.
You can be in the right place,
with the wrong heart.
Minsan we think proximity is enough.
That being in church, serving, or having blessings means we are aligned with God.
But God looks deeper.
He looks at how we treat people.
He looks at how we honor Him in private.
He looks at the condition of our hearts.
Because presence without reverence becomes dangerous.
Blessing without humility becomes harmful.
Let your life not just be near God,
but truly aligned with Him.
Because in the end, it is not where you stand
but how your heart stands before Him that matters.
