Ipswich Minster

Ipswich Minster The Town & Civic Church of Ipswich. St Mary-le-Tower is a parish church with a thriving and diverse congregation with people of all ages.

It has been the town and civic church of Ipswich since 1200, and has long been recognised nationally as a centre for choral excellence, with an emphasis on young people. We offer cathedral style worship in the Anglican Choral Tradition, with an auditioned robed choir. We seek to live out the Christian faith through our worship and service of our town and parish. We seek to love our neighbour, bein

g welcoming and inclusive of all. We aim to provide for the spiritual needs of the town, and all who come, whether just as visitors to the building or as sharers in worship. The church is open for daily prayer and holds a midweek communion. On Sunday our choir shares in the leading of worship with choral services of Matins, Eucharist and Evensong. Our Vicar is The Reverend Tom Mumford who is always delighted to meet parishioners and visitors. You can find his contact information on our website. The choir is professionally run by the Director of Music, Christopher Borrett and the Organist & Assistant Director of Music, William Baldry. Both welcome enquiries from potential new members of the choir. For further details about the life, work and worship of St Mary le Tower, please visit http://www.stmaryletower.org

On Thursday evening, our parish joined together, for the fifth year in a row, with our neighbouring parish of St Mary at the Elms to celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi, the gift to the Church of the sacrament of Holy Communion.

Due to the weather we were unable to process to St Mary at the Elms but the Blessed Sacrament was processed through the Minster instead. As we concluded our celebration, we were met with a beautiful rainbow over the Minster.

A beautiful evening. Thanks be to God!

Today we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi.

Corpus Christi celebrates the Eucharist as the body of Christ, the name 'Corpus Christi' coming from the Latin for 'the body of Christ'. It is also known as the Day of Thanksgiving for the Institution of Holy Communion.

Christians do commemorate the Last Supper, when Christ instituted the Eucharist, on Maundy Thursday, but because this falls during the solemn period of Holy Week, early Christians thought it necessary to have a separate festival with particular focus given to the Eucharist as a gift to the church.

A particular focus of Corpus Christi celebrations is the triumphant liturgical procession in which the sacred host (the wafer that has been consecrated during the Eucharist) is carried out of the Church "for the Christian faithful to make public profession of faith and worship of the Most Blessed Sacrament". Such a procession in medieval times was a central event in the life of the town.

Ipswich Minster, which was once the spiritual home to the Town Guild of Corpus Christi, joins with its neighbouring parish of St Mary-at-the-Elms to celebrate this feast.

Join us TONIGHT at 6:30pm to celebrate.

Before we celebrate today, let us pray

Lord Jesus Christ,
we thank you that in this wonderful sacrament
you have given us the memorial of your passion:
grant us so to reverence the sacred mysteries
of your body and blood
that we may know within ourselves
and show forth in our lives
the fruits of your redemption;
for you are alive and reign with the Father
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen

Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer effortlessly blend traditional material with contemporary sounds. Their performances showcase new interpretations of old songs alongside original self penned tunes and new contemporary songs that are entirely at home in the tradition.

Be entranced by the haunting nyckelharpa, amazed at the cow horn (one of the worlds earliest communication devices) and meet some of the bagpipes that didn’t come from Scotland.

Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer are two of the most versatile musicians of the folk circuit today, a on stage – and now online, the duo are recognised for the high quality of their polished concerts; not only by their charismatic singing and playing but also by their involving, winning presence and easy rapport, their polished delivery that genuinely respects their listeners, and their lively, informed backstories.

Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer have developed an enviable reputation for their ability to reimagine folk and folk dance music; creating sounds that are simultaneously new and progressive, and yet entirely sympathetic to the tradition. They have become deeply involved in folk dance over the last ten years; contra, ceilidh and social dance both as the duo and as Purcell’s Polyphonic Party. They often insert performance elements into their dance music. You are very likely to find yourself dancing to a song – and we dare you not to sing the chorus as you go.

At one end of the entertainment spectrum Vicki & Jonny can also be spotted at castles and properties around the country as medieval minstrels and at the other on the silver screen with recordings and appearances at the cinema for Holywood movies, Netflix, Channel 5, ITVx and the BBC!

Vicki Swan – nyckelharpa, vocals, flute, assorted bagpipes – studied at the Royal College of Music on the double bass. She also plays the various types of bagpipes, flute, recorder, piano and nyckelharpa (Swedish keyed-fiddle). On leaving music college Vicki started down the long path of folk music and was only seen on rare glimpses back in classical orchestras. You’ll find Vicki now inhabiting the troll ridden forests playing her Swedish bagpipes, bagging tunes for new books. Vicki holds the Zorn Bronze Award for the traditional playing of Swedish bagpipes and runs workshops and teaches the nyckelharpa around the UK.

Today is Trinity Sunday

Trinity Sunday commemorates the Christian doctrine of God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—three persons in one substance, an eternal community of love.

Observed on the first Sunday after Pentecost, Trinity Sunday marks the beginning of the Trinity Season (or Trinitytide), also called the Season after Pentecost or Ordinary Time. Trinity is a fitting name for this season because the focus shifts from the great feasts of sacred history—Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Ascension, Easter, and Pentecost—to the ongoing life of Christian growth in the love of our Trinitarian God.

Anglo-Saxons celebrated a feast dedicated to the Trinity as early as the 9th century, although the date’s standardization occurred much later. It has long held a connection with St. Thomas Becket, the 12th-century Archbishop of Canterbury and Martyr. Becket was consecrated as a bishop on the first Sunday after Pentecost. Following his assassination in 1170 and his canonization shortly thereafter, the day gained powerful significance in the English tradition. In 1334, Trinity Sunday became an official observance for the first Sunday after Pentecost across the Western Church.

Before we celebrate today, let us pray,
Almighty and everlasting God,
you have given us your servants grace,
by the confession of a true faith,
to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity
and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the Unity:
keep us steadfast in this faith,
that we may evermore be defended from all adversities;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen
