If I could show you what has made me love the church after almost two decades of ministry, I would take you to what happens after the service is over.

The young dad chasing a toddler down the hallway while his wife finally gets five uninterrupted minutes with another adult.

An older man is telling a younger man the same story he has probably told him three times before, and the younger man is listening anyway

A teenager is opening the car door for an elderly woman who has probably watched him grow up in that same church.

Somebody is standing in the hallway listening to a marriage that is hurting.

Children are weaving through the lobby, laughing loudly, while older members watch them with the kind of smile that comes from remembering when their own children were that small.

An older husband and wife are sharing things with a young couple they probably wish someone had told them forty years ago.

Someone is writing a check because they heard another family is struggling.

The worship team is putting cables away.

A widow is still talking because she doesn’t really want to go home to an empty house yet.

Most of it will never appear on social media.

Nobody calls it revival.

But I believe that this is where much of the beauty of the church actually lives.

Not when church looks like an audience gathered around a stage, but when it starts looking like a family gathered around each another.

In ordinary people loving one another in ways no program could ever manufacture.

Maybe that is why the New Testament uses the language of a body rather than an audience.

An audience gathers around something happening in front of them.

A body belongs to itself.

That is the kind of church I want to spend my life helping build.
