The number of young men wearing shorts is increasing day by day, something that was once unimaginable in our society. Yet, according to Islamic teachings, covering the knees is obligatory (fard), and exposing the knees is forbidden (haram). Moreover, this is a type of sin that is not committed privately but often takes place openly in public.
Among our Muslim youth, the tendency and inclination toward this sin appear to be growing. When a person repeatedly commits a sin openly, over time the feelings of remorse and guilt can gradually disappear from within.
A hadith reports that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"All of my Ummah will be forgiven except those who openly publicize their sins."
(Sahih al-Bukhari 6069; Sahih Muslim 2990)

The reasons include:
• An open sinner may gradually develop a sense of pride in the sin rather than feeling guilty about it, adopting a careless or indifferent attitude.
• An open sinner may, through his actions, encourage others toward the same sin—not necessarily through words, but through the silent invitation of his own behavior.
• An open sinner makes others witnesses to his wrongdoing. Not just one or two people, but potentially many witnesses. According to this view, those witnesses may testify against him regarding his sins on the Day of Judgment.
May Allah protect us from all forms of sin, whether committed openly or secretly.

Note: This translation reflects the religious perspective expressed in the original text. Different Islamic scholars and schools of thought may have differing views regarding the specific ruling on whether the knees must be covered and the details surrounding modest dress.
