No Service this Sunday due to bad weather

We have been monitoring the weather forecast for this weekend and outlook is not good with temperatures not rising much above freezing.

We have come to the conclusion that it would be wise to cancel the service for this Sunday. We are very sorry that we canโ€™t meet to worship and Praise our Glorious Lord and share fellowship with one another.

Please take care and be safe in these challenging road and weather conditions and hopefully we will meet on Sunday 18th January at the usual time and place. God Bless.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for our earthly fathers and those who have treated us as their own. Thank you, Father, that, for each of us, you have chosen them to be our father on this earth.

To all those who are fathers, may He bless you and hold you in His perfect love today and always. May He, our perfect Father, equip you to "train your children in the way they should go so that even when they are old they will not depart from it" [Proverbs 22:6].

We also but especially lift up today and ask that you bless:

Those who are struggling in their relationship as a father or as a child and for whom this day is sadder than it is happy.

For those who feel they have failed as a father.

For those whose fathers have deserted them or been a disappointment.

For the fathers of prodigals, or those who don't know where their children are or who are estranged from their children.

Those who are grieving the loss of a father or a child or who have given up a child for adoption.

Those who have never known the love and joy of being a father.

For those who are missing their fathers or their children even more than usual today

And for those where there is real pain and bitterness.

For all those who are struggling today, may the grace of God displace the sadness and the shame and bring hope, healing and restoration in those relationships.

Amen.

This Easter morning we continue our reflection from Friday on Jesusโ€™ crucifixion and the repentant thief. The story shows us that nothing we have done is so bad as to be unforgiveable. The repentant thief is under a death sentence. So, his crime must have been serious. Yet, Jesus forgives him merely because he acknowledges his sinfulness.
Ultimately, the story shows us there is always hope. It shows us that, for those who do not yet believe, it is never too late. Even for those in this lifeโ€™s โ€œlast chance saloon,โ€ God will never shut the door to His salvation.

This simple story has to be the greatest example of a spiritual encounter anywhere in the Gospels. Here, we see two men discussing eternity as they are slowly being asphyxiated. Itโ€™s not the place you would plan to have such an encounter. But God does. Indeed, He has planned this very moment before the beginning of time. It is not a coincidence but part of His eternal plan to rescue this man.

Here, we see Jesusโ€™ atonement and evangelism working together. Jesus has been appointed to die for the sins of the world but, at the same time, He is bringing good news to this man. It is the gospel enacted and the gospel proclaimed in the same moment. And it shows us there is no limit to what Jesus will do to draw us to Himself. He is enduring the unendurable on the cross yet going all out to get the good news to this one man (and, by analogy, to everyone) so that He might take him to paradise with Him.

And, for that, I say โ€œThank You, Jesus.โ€

Thank you, Father, for making a way for anyone who acknowledges You to be saved. Today, I pray for those who do not yet know You, that their eyes will be opened to Your amazing gift. Amen.

Easter is a time when, as Christians, we reflect on the death and resurrection of Jesus and the enormity of what He has done to restore us to a right relationship with God. And itโ€™s all by Godโ€™s grace, not through works.

For me, the importance of these things is revealed in the story of the thief crucified next to Jesus. The story is told in Mattthew 27:38-44 and Luke 23:39-43. We can sometimes be guilty of over-complicating our faith. But the story of the thief on the cross strips it right back to the truth that we are saved by grace alone.

Both thieves crucified with Jesus initially mock Him just like the crowd and the religious leaders. But the repentant thief recognises his sinfulness and acknowledges Jesus. He rebukes the other criminal: โ€œโ€™Donโ€™t you fear Godโ€ฆ. since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.โ€™โ€ And then he says: โ€œโ€™Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.โ€™โ€

And in doing just that, the repentant thief is saved. A thief who had woken up that morning destined for hell has his destiny changed with a simple plea to the Saviour: โ€œJesus, remember me.โ€

The story of the thief on the cross shows us that salvation is a gift. The repentant thief has no time for good deeds. He cannot repay those he had stolen from, help the poor, be baptised, make amends for his crimes. He doesnโ€™t have a sophisticated faith. All he can do is look to Jesus and ask for mercy.

And thatโ€™s enough.
